Socially Just Literacy Teaching Within Virtual Spaces: Using Woods’ Model For Evaluating Practice, Elizabeth Isidro, Laura Teichert

This study inquires into pre-service teachers’ teaching experiences within a virtual tutoring practicum in a literacy methods course. Using Woods’ (2018) model of Socially Just Literacy Pedagogy, we approach the research question: What are undergraduate pre-service teachers’ experiences in virtual tutoring that align with socially just literacy teaching? Drawing from interviews, we engaged in Narrative Inquiry as a way to highlight participants’ experiences while providing us rich contextual, temporal, and social understandings of their experiences that move towards socially just literacy teaching. “In The Midst Of Experience:” Civic Education Through Narrative Creation, Jeff Spanke

Through employing a narrative, reflective approach, I discuss how the experience of working with international students during a summer institute informed the developed and implementation of a civically minded project in a college Young Adult Literature seminar. The project sought to frame "America" as an actual teenager, relative to other, more "adult" countries in the world, and asked students to construct a conventional YA narrative featuring America as the primary character. Through this narrative, I explain the various successes of the project and ultimately argue that students' stories and original compositions offer a viable mechanism for progressive, democratic citizenship education …

Intersections At A Multiethnic High School: C3wp Meets Culturally Relevant And Sustaining Pedagogy, Amy Carpenter Ford, Maria G. Kioussis

In this article we describe how an English teacher at a multiethnic, suburban high school adapted the National Writing Project’s innovative argument writing program, the College, Career, and Community Writing Program, to be culturally relevant and sustaining for students in her 10th grade English Language Arts classroom. Building on the C3WP’s roots in critical pedagogy and emphasis on engaging multiple perspectives, we explore the program’s potential in multiethnic classrooms as part of a culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogy. “The International Baccalaureate Learner Profile: A Social Justice Framework in the English Language Arts Classroom," highlights the story of an expert secondary ELA teacher as she navigates the political climate in the wake of the 2016 presidential election. Through narrative, classroom anecdote, and pedagogical reflection, this story offers readers an authentic portrait of the complex decisions that face teachers as we navigate tenuous political terrain in our classrooms.
