Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

In this edited transcript of a panel at the Society of Biblical Literature (November 23, 2009, Boston, Massachusetts), five Bible scholars give brief presentations on various challenges and opportunities encountered when teaching academic biblical studies courses online in both undergraduate and theological education contexts. Each presentation is followed by questions from the audience and discussion. Topics include: a typology of different approaches to online teaching, advantages and disadvantages of online compared to face-to-face classrooms (for both students and faculty), opportunities for imaginative exercises online, the advantages of online threaded discussions, and the joys and pitfalls of bringing your course into …

The Northwest Corner Of Heaven: A History Of Cascade College, Gary L. Tandy Apr 2009

The Northwest Corner Of Heaven: A History Of Cascade College, Gary L. Tandy

Faculty Publications - Department of English

This is not a history that I wanted to write—at least not yet. When I moved my family to Portland in the summer of 1994 to become a charter faculty member of Cascade College, the future looked bright. After the closure of Columbia Christian College in 1993, much excitement had been generated among Northwest supporters of Christian education when Oklahoma Christian University agreed to lend its accreditation to a branch campus to operate on the site of the former college.

As one of the “pioneer” faculty members, I was encouraged by the support expressed for the college by the church …

Differentiated Instruction In The Work Sample: A Study Of Preservice Teacher Practice, Amy Lynn Dee Jan 2009

Differentiated Instruction In The Work Sample: A Study Of Preservice Teacher Practice, Amy Lynn Dee

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Successfully implementing the practice of inclusion by differentiating instruction is dependent upon both the skills and attitudes of general education teachers. New general education teachers who are entering the field are particularly vulnerable to the demands and stress of the profession, and exemplary preservice teacher education programs must prepare pre service teachers to meet the needs of all students by giving them the skills to make appropriate lesson adaptations, accommodations and modifications. This study investigates the manifestation of differentiation for special education students in work sample lesson plans written by preservice teachers working toward an elementary school credential. The research …

Immersive Virtual Worlds In Educational Practice: Introducing Educators To Second Life, Anita Zijdemans Boudreau, Scot Headley, Robin Ashford

Faculty Publications - George Fox University Libraries

This paper reports outcomes of the second iteration of a longitudinal action research study on the affordances of Second Life for enriched online teaching and learning. Introduction to Second for Educators was a professional development opportunity offered to graduate students, faculty, and administrators as a distance course in spring 2009. Participants’ wiki reflections and exit questionnaires were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of a constructivist instructional design using guided discovery within a supportive Community of Inquiry [CoI]. Results indicate that the constructivist design ensures a level of facilitation requisite to successfully scaffolding novices’ experiential learning inworld. The CoI model is …

Do Educators Need A Second Life? Exploring Possibilities For Enriched Technology-Based Distance Learning, Anita Zijdemans Boudreu, Scot Headley, Robin Ashford

Faculty Publications - George Fox University Libraries

This paper reports outcomes of our first Action Research study involving implementing Second Life [SL] in a graduate distance course on exploring community online. Participant blog entries and transcripts of ‘in-world’ class sessions were analyzed to determine: how well the participants learned to be successful SL residents; whether observations and meeting discussions reflected themes of community and experiential learning; and how participants evaluated their experiences and the educational potential of SL. Results indicate that SL is a complex environment requiring much practice to develop competencies for navigating inworld. Once accomplished, however, participants reported that although SL did not replicate real …

Clarifying "Faith-Learning Integration": Essentially Contested Concepts And The Concept-Conception Distinction, Ken Badley Jan 2009

Clarifying "Faith-Learning Integration": Essentially Contested Concepts And The Concept-Conception Distinction, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

The language of “faith-learning integration” remains popular among evangelical educators in both K–12 and higher education. Some observers suggest for theological and educational reasons that Christan educators replace integration language with other language. Even its advocates do not agree on what would count as integration. This article suggests that both the concept-conception distinction and W. B. Gallie’s category of an essentially contested concept shed light on the phrase. If faith-learning integration is an essentially contested concept, or is a concept subject to conception-building, then Christian educators may never agree on what counts as a paradigm case.

Resisting Curriculum Integration: Do Good Fences Make Good Neighbors?, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Curriculum integration has a long history. In this paper I catalog several arguments for resistance against integration and present the historical roots of support for those arguments offered by critics of curriculum integration. First, I review some linguistic and usage limitations of the term. Second, I examine several practical and institutional difficulties related to implementing integrated curriculum. Third, I explore some interconnected psychological and sociological dimensions of resistance to curriculum integration. Finally, I consider several epistemological dimensions of resistance to integration, some of which underlie the sociological and psychological aspects. While recognizing that some resistance to integration will never be …

Developing A Global Culture Of Collaboration For School Counselors, Suzy R. Thomas, Lorraine Dekruyf, Peggy Hetherington, Dean Lesicko

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

School-university partnerships are becoming increasingly popular within the field of school counseling. Peer consultation groups offer a specific type of partnership and support for practitioners, numerous advantages for those in higher education, and significant potential for international application. This article expands on Thomas’ (2005) peer consultation model developed for school counseling alumni, with adaptations of the model in two universities, as well as several K12 school districts within a single county. Data from participant evaluations indicate strong support for the personal and professional value of peer consultation.
