Resolving Student-To-Student Conflict In Our School: The Effects Of Conflict Resolution And Peer Mediation On School Climate, Dottie Kamilos

Selected Master of Education Action Research Projects

The purpose of this research project is to evaluate the peer mediation program that was implemented at Western Mennonite School in the fall of 2005. The program was started after an increase in student-to-student conflict in 2004. A student survey in 2005 reported that 32% of our students experienced times when they felt threatened or unsafe on campus. The program lasted for one academic school year. During that time, 14 middle and high school students were trained as mediators and participated in a peer mediation program. I was the coordinator of the program that included a team of six other …

Excerpt: "Dr. Alcantara offers us some significant insights that deserve both careful consideration and further discussion. Of primary importance, in my view, is his observation "that the humanities have lost their relevance." He attributes this loss of relevance, in part, to several shifts in educational methodology which have taken place since the middle of the twentieth century. So, instead of being seen as culturally central the humanities have been relegated to a minor role within culture generally and academia in particular. He goes on to observe that Christian higher education can choose this path, which relegates the humanities to a …

From the survey sample, the researcher selected 5 representative families for observations and interviews to further explore how literacy is practiced in Mexican immigrant families' homes and daily lives. This paper will share the results of a research study conducted during the 2007-2008 school year. It was designed to tell the stories of selected Oregon high schools that were having some success in implementing innovations and practices, and were making a difference in student’s learning, meeting content standards, and feeling connections to their schools. Interviews were conducted with students, teachers, and administrators to gain their perspectives of what was “working” at their high school. Additional data was collected from surveys, focus groups, artifacts, and researcher reflections. An analysis of the data revealed three overarching themes—what’s best for kids, community, …

Church Satisfaction Among Rural Minnesota Protestant Lay Leaders, Terry Huffman

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This paper reports on general church satisfaction among a sample of rural Minnesota Protestant lay leaders. The author examined the relationship between the dependent variable general church satisfaction with eight independent variables divided into three dimensions of church life. Prominent findings indicate that the vitality of churches is associated with higher levels of church satisfaction among the lay leaders. Additionally, older lay leaders reported greater general satisfaction with their church than did younger lay leaders. However, church contentment is not significantly connected to the mere size of the congregation, type of denomination, gender of the lay leader, or status of …
