The Effect Of Cross-Age Tutoring On Reading Attitude, Joshua John Quick Jan 2000

The Effect Of Cross-Age Tutoring On Reading Attitude, Joshua John Quick

Masters Theses

One of the greatest challenges facing teachers of reading today is the negative attitude of students toward reading. One suggested means of positively influencing the reading attitude of students is cross-age tutoring. However, a study is needed to establish whether a clear link exists between cross-age tutoring and positive changes in reading attitude. Experimental research was conducted during the course of an academic quarter (nine weeks) to determine whether cross-age tutoring has a positive impact on reading attitude. The subjects of the study were first grade students (n=12). The first graders were identified for the study based on low scores …

Best Practices In Transition: A Descriptive Study Of A Rural High School Grades 9 Through 12, Michelle A. Messerli Bolander

Masters Theses

This study examined and determined the practices in transition that were currently being implemented, what transition opportunities were available, and which practices could be utilized at Litchfield High School during Fall 2000 to support a smoother transition from middle school to high school for ninth grade students with and without special needs. The study did not establish a relationship of cause and effect, but rather compared cases (administrators, special educators, and regular educators) through qualitative data that were supported by quantitative measures. The population surveyed consisted of the 33 teachers and 2 administrators at the high school level, with different …

A World Wide Web Site Of Special Education Law For Educators In Illinois, Roger L. Epperson Jan 2000

A World Wide Web Site Of Special Education Law For Educators In Illinois, Roger L. Epperson

Masters Theses

Any educational decision regarding evaluation, placement, or instruction of special education students involves legal liability and accountability for a school district. Without the special education legal knowledge from primary legal sources needed to make prudent education decisions, school districts are vulnerable to legal challenges. Too often, educators provide services to special education students without critical knowledge of the educators' role in the special education legal process.

In this study, just the preliminary phase of constructing a special education law World Wide Web (W3) site for Illinois educators was considered. There were two objectives in this study. The first objective was …

The Role Of The Administrator In Creating An Inclusive Environment, Vicki S. Rasmussen

Masters Theses

The role the administrator plays in the development of an inclusive environment was investigated by conducting a review of literature and conducting a study of administrative views of inclusion in one East Central Illinois school district. Results showed that the success of the implementation of an inclusive school environment depended upon the role that the administrator was willing to play. Traits common to administrators who were successful in fostering inclusion along with problems that may be encountered are discussed. Case studies are reviewed, collected data analyzed, and recommendations for future practice are presented.

A Comparison Of Greek Vs. Non-Greek Living On College Adjustment During The Sophomore Year, Matthew Watkins

Masters Theses

Though research with living environment and student adjustment as their focus have been conducted, the majority have focused on academic adjustment and "cognitive growth." This study was conducted to determine if a relationship existed between certain living environments (Greek and Non-Greek housing) and a student's adjustment to college in 5 areas corresponding to the scales that comprise the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ). The SACQ is composed of five scales: Academic Adjustment, Social Adjustment, Personal-Emotional Adjustment, Attachment subscale, and an Overall scale of adjustment. The Effects Of Program Frequency On The Physical Fitness Of Kindergarten Students, Tim Kliethermes

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of program frequency of physical fitness scores of kindergarten students. Kindergarten students from a daily program (n= 43, 21 males, 13 females) and a twice-weekly program (n= 143, 85 males, 58 females) were compared on specific fitness scores from the President's Challenge Physical Fitness Test (PCPFS, 2000). Specifically the purposes were to (a) determine if there were significant differences in males' and females' mean fitness scores compared across program frequency, (b) determine if there was a relationship between program frequency and percentage of male and female students meeting 50th percentile …

The Cultural Sensitivity Of Pre-Service Teachers: Measuring The Degree To Which Teachers Are Prepared To Work With Diverse Populations, Teresa A. Freking Jan 2000

The Cultural Sensitivity Of Pre-Service Teachers: Measuring The Degree To Which Teachers Are Prepared To Work With Diverse Populations, Teresa A. Freking

Masters Theses

A study was conducted of 39 pre-service teachers regarding their level of cultural sensitivity. Participants completed a 26-item inventory adapted from the Cultural Diversity Awareness Inventory created by Henry (1985). The results suggest that a multicultural field experience may have a slight positive effect on the cultural sensitivity of pre-service teachers, however, this effect seems to be limited in degree and specific to certain response types. A general, positive effect on the overall cultural sensitivity of pre-service teachers is not supported in this study. The results of the second part of the study indicate that pre-service teachers today self-report they …

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Influence Of Standardized Tests On Curricular And Instructional Practices, Jennifer Joy Davis Fox Jan 2000

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Influence Of Standardized Tests On Curricular And Instructional Practices, Jennifer Joy Davis Fox

Masters Theses

Does a student's performance on a standardized test measure the quality of education he/she is receiving? Many students today are being bombarded with standardized assessments mandated by state and district policies. The pressure to perform well on these assessments causes teachers to focus their classroom instructional time on test preparation even at the expense of the non-tested topics and curricular areas. A written survey was designed to determine teachers' perceptions of the influence of standardized tests on curricular and instructional practices. Participating in this study were third and fourth grade teachers (n=67) who administer the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). …
