This is a book review of Michael Kimmel's 2008 book, Guyland: The perilous world where boys become men. The review was written with a focus on the challenges young men face during the college years, and the impact that a "charasmatic adult" such as a fraternity advisor can have on their lives.

This paper is a proposal to carry out a systematic program evaluation of the Sigma Phi Epsilon EDGE New Member Program, and was submitted to the Department of Education for funding in February 2009. The letter I received from the DOE indicated that my proposal did not fully meet the criteria for the grant competition since the study included students from many campuses rather than being focused on prevention programming for just one campus. The proposal does, however, provide evidence that new member education on prevention among fraternity men within six weeks of their joining an organization is promising. Compare …

Multicultural counseling competencies (MCCs) have typically been measured with instruments designed for and normed on mental health professionals (for example, MCCTS-R; Holcomb-McCoy, 2001; MCI; Sodowsky, Taffe, Gutkin, & Wise, 1994; D’Andrea, Daniels, & Heck, 1991). One published instrument specifically assesses school counselor MCCs (MCCTS-R; Holcomb-McCoy, 2001) but it does not conform to ASCA standards (2010, E.2). Following a set of validation procedures, an instrument designed to specifically assess school counselors’ multicultural counseling competencies was created that conforms to American School Counselor Association and Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development standards. Prospective Elementary School Teachers’ Culturally Responsive Teaching Self‐Efficacy Beliefs, Catherine L. Polydore

In this study, the authors examined prospective elementary school teachers’ culturally responsive teaching self‐efficacy beliefs. The Culturally Responsive Teaching Self‐Efficacy Scale was administered to a sample of 104 preservice teachers enrolled in a teacher education program located at a large Midwestern university. These results suggested that prospective elementary school teachers felt more confident in their ability to use a variety of teaching and instructional methods, communicate with parents, and develop positive, trusting relationships with students. The sample of preservice teachers, however, were less confident in their ability to communicate with English Language Learners, minimize the effects of the cultural mismatch, …

An Exploratory Case Study Of Young Children’S Interactive Play Behaviors With A Non-English Speaking Child, Joohi Lee, Sham'ah Md-Yunus, Wonim Son, Michelle Meadows

This study is an examination of preschool-age English speaking children’s interactive play behaviors with a non-English speaking child (NEC). The play types of a NEC were reported using the Parten’s categories of solitary, parallel, and interactive play. In addition, English-speaking children’s interactive play with a non-English speaking child were reported in this study using categories of affiliative, possession-related, prosocial, and aggressive behavior from Ramsey’s 1987 study.

Pass the Plate, the Legend and Legacy of United States Congressman, Kenneth J. Gray is told by stories that showcase one the most effective Congress-man of the Twentieth Century--the Congressman that made deals to actualize his visions and the visions of individuals who identified the nation's common good. Kenny was an ordinary person from an ordinary place that was able to accomplish extraordinary things for the people. As writers, the primary strategy of this book is to convey his success from the perspective of two citizen educators.
