Dual Vocations Of Science And Religion: A Historical Case Study Of Benedictine Women, Diana Fenton

This study examines Catholic Benedictine sisters who majored in sciences and taught science for over 100 years at the College of Saint Benedict in Saint Joseph, Minnesota, USA. In 1913, the College of Saint Benedict began as a women’s college, expanding Saint Benedict’s Academy, a boarding high school for women. This historical organizational case study analyzed archived data to understand the benefits and challenges of women who lived religious lives and studied science. Writing For Intercultural Growth On Study Abroad In Australia, Allison J. Spenader, Joy L. H. Ruis, Catherine Bohn-Gettler

For students participating in study abroad programs in seemingly familiar environs, ongoing cultural mentoring is critically important. This study looks at intercultural development using both the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and qualitative analysis of reflective writing assignments. U.S. participants in a semester-long faculty-led program in Australia experienced significant intercultural growth as measured by the IDI. Four writing prompts were analyzed in terms of how well they correlated with student IDI Developmental Orientation (DO) scores. Written reflection reveals how students write about intercultural issues at different developmental stages. Effects Of Task Relevance Instructions And Topic Beliefs On Reading Processes And Memory, Catherine Bohn-Gettler, Matthew Mccrudden

This study investigated the effects of task relevance instructions and topic beliefs on reading processes and memory for belief-related text. Undergraduates received task instructions (focus on arguments for vs. against) before reading a dual-position text. In Experiment 1 (n = 88), a reading time methodology showed no differences in reading time for task-relevant and task-irrelevant text, but participants recalled task-relevant text better than task-irrelevant text independently of whether the information was consistent with their topic beliefs. As educators interested in supporting linguistically and culturally diverse learners, we have had to view our roles in different ways since the presidential campaign and the election of Trump. In this article, two teacher educators and two inservice ESL teachers in the U.S. reflect on our various experiences working with Muslim students and preparing teachers to support Muslim students in the current socio-political context. We discuss these experiences with the goal of suggesting some priorities in teacher education. Narrative Reflexivity In Raced And Gendered Spaces, Terri L. Rodriguez

This article explores the reflexive narrative positioning in which the author engages as a White woman, a secondary English teacher, and an educational researcher inquiring into the experiences of Latino/a teacher candidates in a Midwestern teacher education program. The author argues that critically reflexive narrative positioning enables her to embrace a stance toward equity and social justice for linguistically, racially, and ethnically diverse students in U.S. public schools. In this article, she shares three narrative vignettes through which she positions herself in relation to the Latino/a preservice teachers with whom she collaborated in the research project.
