The term "model" school has two meanings. One is that which relates to an elementary school, sometimes a secondary school, connected more or less intimately with the professional work of a normal school, or training school for teachers. The other refers to a school which presumes to show the efficiency of certain educational theories and to increase the efficiency of the schools of the state, nation or empire by setting an example. This study has been undertaken for the purpose of securing an idea of some of the more important professional conditions and tendencies observable in the teaching body as found in the public schools of Massachusetts. The last sections present in addition to conclusions that have been reached directly or indirectly as a result of the findings herein presented a few suggestions as to what needs to be done for and by the teachers, at least in the humble opinion of the writer.

A study of the history of industrial education in Massachusetts is instructive and of peculiar interest for several reasons. It was the first state to scientifically investigate industrial education, and to pass laws as committing the state to actively engage in the establishment of industrial schools. It has had a more varied history in the administration and control of this form of education than any other state, and exceeds all other states, with the possible exception of New York (in 1911), in the number of and the variety of types of industrial schools.
