It was the purpose of this study to propose, in light of recent research, a revised and extended language arts program for high school freshmen with particular attention to (1) improved articulation and sequence; (2) suggested ideas for procedures and creativity; (3) inclusion of more specific and detailed content; (4) incorporation of some of the recent trends in methods, materials, and content; and (5) an attempt to avoid duplication and reiteration.

Many students who enter high school at Milton-Freewater, Oregon, are unable to do satisfactory work because they can not read. This situation, although common in secondary schools in the United States, must be improved. At the present time the student whose reading ability is two to six years below his grade level is being placed in a reading class.The purpose of this paper was (1) to survey the general principles of good diagnosis, (2) to determine the criteria for selecting suitable tests, and (3) to suggest suitable tools for appraisal to be used by the classroom teacher.

The purposes of this study were (1) to determine and evaluate some of the reading skills that would prove most valuable in the intermediate reading program, (2) to outline the best ways of analyzing the individual child's ability to use these skills, and (3) to collect and develop in an appendix for classroom use various inventories, check lists, standardized tests, and informal tests of appraisal.
