Assessment At The Program Level: Using Assessment To Improve Undergraduate Statistics Programs, Roxy Peck, Beth Chance

With the growing focus on assessment and accountability, programs at many universities are now expected to define learning goals and objectives at the program level (as opposed to the course level) and to devise strategies for assessing whether these goals and objectives are being met. This paper will look at the role of assessment at the program level and how the resulting information about student learning can be used to make informed decisions about curriculum.

Multidisciplinary (MD) team skills are of increasing importance in industry, and are required for programs that are ABET accredited. This can be challenging to provide, particularly for programs with high unit counts and a large student body. We have responded by establishing a multidisciplinary graduation requirement across the College of Engineering at Cal Poly. This requirement is mandatory. It may be satisfied by various curricular and co-curricular routes, easing throughput issues compared to having a single venue. In the paper we describe activities that satisfy the MD requirement, our general approach and assessment methods.

Preparing an engineering program for an ABET accreditation visit can be both daunting and frustrating. The requirements of ABET Criterion 3, in particular, can be confusing and may even seem contradictory. This paper suggests some methods and approaches that address the Criterion 3 requirements for formulation and assessment of program outcomes. Additional thoughts for successful accreditation preparation are also included. The authors are both civil engineering program directors who have prepared their own programs for accreditation and are ABET evaluators with multiple accreditation visits to other programs.

There are currently 17 ABET accredited Architectural Engineering programs in the United States. This paper presents curriculum data for these Architectural Engineering programs and discusses the challenges of finding common ground and conveying program needs to the rest of the academic community – especially when the programs are so small in number and so diverse in their structure and course offerings.

In response to societal, pedagogical, and economic pressures for change, colleges of education and departments of educational leadership have sought alternative formats for the professional development of educational leaders (Clark and Clark, 1997; Glasman and Glasman, 1997; Short, 1997; Petersen and Barnett, 2005). A major programmatic development that is illustrative of responses to these pressures is the use of cohorts, which have emerged as a popular program delivery strategy (Murphy, 1999). This article reports a study of coauthor Laura Wright as she learned to teach secondary school grammar in four settings: university teacher education program, student teaching, her first job, and second job. Data for her university program came from Laura’s journals and projects from her course work. Data from student teaching and her first job included interviews and field notes from observations and interviews and self-reports by Laura of teaching conducted on other occasions. Purpose: This article reports on the findings of a study whose purpose was to explore the experiences of caregivers of gay and lesbian seniors living in the community and to identify issues that emerged from an exploration of access to and equity in health care services for these populations. Design and Methods: The study used a qualitative methodology based upon principles of grounded theory in which open-ended interviews were undertaken with 17 caregivers living in three different cities across Canada.
