Inclusion is the method by which many school districts meet the requirement of educating students with disabilities in the “least restrictive environment”. While it is an established practice, supported by the educational community and most families alike, there is a gap in the literature regarding how students feel about being in inclusion classes. In order to learn more about the student experience, five students with special education needs from a rural high school were interviewed about their involvement in inclusion. Cultural Change In Rural Schools Through Enrichment And Intervention In A Quality After-School Program, Kimberly Stepp Mrs.

A review of the best practices and research literature resulted in the implementation and evaluation of an after-school program for a small rural school in Northern California. The program is designed to overcome some unique challenges for rural schools by offering after school instructional support, homework assistance, and enrichment opportunities that work together to create a rich and successful environment to support student growth. A program evaluation survey measured parents’/guardians’ satisfaction with the program demonstrating significant support after two years. Rural adults participate in education at lower rates than their urban counterparts. If rural communities and their residents are to compete and stay viable in a global economy that demands life-long learning, it is imperative to increase adult motivation to engage in education. Non- participation by rural adults will be examined through an investigation of the concept of rural, rural education, participants and non-participants, and barriers to and motivations for participation. Lastly, Wlodkowski’s (2008) Motivational Framework for Culturally Responsive Teaching will be explored as a framework to present a learning-to-learn curriculum addressing local barriers to rural adult non-participation and promoting …
