“You Taught Us How To Change The World”: A Critical Autoethnography Reimagining The Future Of Education, Isabella Howard
“You Taught Us How To Change The World”: A Critical Autoethnography Reimagining The Future Of Education, Isabella Howard
Undergraduate Theses
As schools become more culturally and linguistically diverse, we need trained, well-prepared educators that value students for who they are, build on their backgrounds, and maintain their unique identities in the classroom. An asset-based, culturally sustaining approach to teaching incorporates theoretical grounding, a consideration of global identities, and a sociopolitical edge that allows students to thrive and think analytically. Through this approach, we can give students more confidence in their abilities as learners by activating their prior knowledge and experience to break down the content and build understanding of it, and we can connect the students to their learning, providing …
Promoting Engagement Through Socioscientific Inquiry At The Middle School Level, Kaitlyn Kalehuawehe
Promoting Engagement Through Socioscientific Inquiry At The Middle School Level, Kaitlyn Kalehuawehe
Undergraduate Theses
Learning science is not just about facts. It is an area that has the potential to expand beyond the classroom. There is a concern for students having negative associations with science, and not seeing the relevance it plays within their lives. The curriculum should reflect science's value within society and its influence on complex issues. Learning science in the context of socioscientific issues (SSI) can promote an understanding that connects science to society and everyday life. The main objective of this thesis is the see how the use of SSI in the middle school classroom can promote student engagement and …
Okay Boomer: Overcoming Cringe To Teach A Unit On Meme Analysis, John Sparks
Okay Boomer: Overcoming Cringe To Teach A Unit On Meme Analysis, John Sparks
Undergraduate Theses
This project goes over a detailed explanation for why and how memes should be included in the classroom. It explains the components of a meme in detail, describes how to teach them, and how to overcome those awkward embarrassing moments that come from trying to be relevant known as “cringe”, in the classroom. The unit itself is split into 5 days of lessons that discuss the structures, allusions, and multiple creators that make up a meme. Content such as propaganda and how memes impact the broader conversations is also taught in these lessons. There is an accompanying slide show and …
Science And Writing And Apes, Oh My! An Iterative Interdisciplinary Approach To Argumentative Writing And Forensic Science In The Secondary English Classroom, Lexi Cox
Undergraduate Theses
This hybrid thesis consists of a research base that informs the creation of an interdisciplinary English Language Arts and forensic science unit for tenth grade students. Using “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” by Edgar Allan Poe as an anchor text, students explore argumentative writing, the nature of science, and various technologies as they construct their own experiments and write an argument identifying the criminal of the story. This unit went through three iterations in its evolution, receiving feedback from university professors and high school English teachers. Emerging themes from this feedback included modeling expectations, emphasizing interdisciplinarity, and alternative schedules …
Exploring A Qualitative Approach To Arts Advocacy And Evaluation, Lycette C. Belisle
Exploring A Qualitative Approach To Arts Advocacy And Evaluation, Lycette C. Belisle
Undergraduate Theses
The quantitative impact of the arts has become an increasingly important factor in determining the overall value of a project, and is often used to determine acceptance of submissions, public recognition and funding disbursement. This project evaluates current understandings of how the arts function within society, popular methods for determining the value of the arts and explores how qualitative reasoning can be utilized to communicate the value of supporting artistic endeavors. While placing a numerical value on the arts based on data collection can be important, this project will aim to evaluate the implications of relying so heavily on facts …
The Effects Of Small-Group Collaboration On Student Attitudes Towards Mathematics, Philip Golden
The Effects Of Small-Group Collaboration On Student Attitudes Towards Mathematics, Philip Golden
Undergraduate Theses
Collaborative group work has become a prevalent teaching strategy in high school mathematics classrooms, and for good reason. When implemented effectively, studies show that collaboration improves student learning outcomes. However, there are other factors to consider when deciding on best practices for teaching, one being student attitudes towards the content. In particular student attitudes towards mathematics (which are not generally positive) are important to consider. In this study, students in a high school mathematics classroom took a survey before and after a unit that implemented collaborative strategies. Results of the study indicate that student attitudes towards math improved after working …
Effects Of A Token Economy On A Student With Autism Exhibiting Disruptive Behavior In A General Education Classroom, Taylor W. Webb
Effects Of A Token Economy On A Student With Autism Exhibiting Disruptive Behavior In A General Education Classroom, Taylor W. Webb
Undergraduate Theses
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges; and estimates that one in 68 children in the United States are affected by it (CDC, 2014). This prevalence rate is much higher than that of prior decades and has led to trends and factors related to educational programs that include an increase in the inclusion of students with ASD in general education classrooms. For this reason, it is crucial that teachers have access to efficient, teacher-friendly, and research-based interventions for students with ASD in …
