Side By Side : An Exploration Of Family Programs In New York City And Three Pilot Family Programs At Dia : Beacon, Jeanne Parkhurst

This independent study includes a review of literature about learning theories relevant to museum education, family learning, and family learning in museums. This exploration also includes observations done at six art museums in New York City. As a result of these observations I outline teaching techniques for "best practice" methods while also offering first-hand insight into the unique and complex dynamic of family learning in museums. Finally, I describe my process for developing and implementing three pilot family programs a Dia : Beacon, a contemporary art museum in Beacon, NY which is part of the Dia Art Foundation.

The idea of gathering tools for parents of bilingual children to utilize at home to support their children's reading progress emerged from the combination of different factors. My placements during my studies at Bank Street College of Education provided me with the opportunity to learn reading strategies and utilize them with young children in the classroom.

This thesis presents a Social Studies curriculum guide on Africa, specifically, the Dogon people of Mali. It contains a detailed outline of possible curricular units on The Geography of Africa and Mali; Traditional Cultural Practices of the Dogon; and the Dogon Today. Related lesson plans explore ways to teach and learn about the Dogon through age-appropriate primary and secondary sources, especially by reading Dogon stories, looking at Dogon art, architecture, and ceremonies, and listening to Dogon music. The imagination is central to all learning. This paper provides science educators with a better understanding of imagination's role in learning and how it may be routinely engaged in the education of budding scientists. Both theoretical and practical dimensions are addressed. Part one defines the imagination, provides an overview of Kieran Egan's (1997) theory of lmaginative Education, introduces Egan's framework for developing lessons using Imaginative Education, and provides an argument for imaginative science education. This study explores the classroom teacher's role in a collaboration between a New York City classroom teacher and Lincoln Center Institute. Aesthetic education, imaginative learning, and collaboration between classroom teachers and teaching artists, the core practices of Lincoln Center Institute's inquiry units, are defined through a review of other established approaches to these concepts. The perspective of a third-grade teacher who participated in an inquiry unit focused on MytholoJazz, a storytelling performance illustrates the purpose, planning, and action that characterize Lincoln Center Institute's programs.
