The Initial Work And Education Experiences Of Early School Leavers: A Comparative Study Of Australia And The United States, Stephen Lamb, Russell Rumberger

This study examines the experiences of early school leavers from the United States and Australia in the first two years beyond secondary school. The results of the study indicate that similar percentages of students left school early in the United States and Australia - 21 percent in the United States and 22 percent in Australia. In both countries the study indicated that school leaving rates were substantially higher for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, for students attending public and government school, and for students with low achievement levels. In 1995, a nationally representative sample of approximately 13,000 Year 9 students was selected to form the first cohort of the new Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth program. The sample was constructed by randomly selecting two Year 9 classes from a national sample of 300 schools designed to represent state and sector. Reading and numeracy tests were administered to students in their schools to provide information on early school achievement for use in later analyses of educational and labour market participation. There is little doubt that soocioeconomic background is an important concept among social researchers and policy developers. First and foremost, the relationships between socioeconomic status with educational and labour market outcomes is an important indicator of the degree of social equity and the success of policies aimed at reducing social inequality. Although there is almost universal agreement on the importance of socioeconomic status there is little agreement on its conceptualisation and measurement. This document reports on participation by young people in education and training in Australia. It presents results on the patterns and processes of educational participation for four cohorts of young Australians, born in 1961, 1965, 1970 and 1975 respectively. For each cohort, the types of educational participation documented include: completion of Year 12; entry to higher education from Year 12; participation in higher education; participation in a TAFE course; participation in an apprenticeship or traineeship; participation in any form of post school education and training.

This report examines patterns of course enrolments in Year 12 and the consequences of students course enrolments on their education, training and work experiences to age 19. In particular, it looks at what happens to young people enrolled in different senior school subjects as they move from school to post-school education and training and to work. The analysis is based on data collected between 1990 and 1997 as part of the Australian Youth Survey (AYS), a national longitudinal survey of young people. This report examines early school leaving in Australia. It focuses on students who leave school before the beginning of year 11 using a national representative longitudinal survey of Australian youth who were in Year 9 in 1995. The report examines the social and demographic characteristics of early school leavers and their reasons for early school leaving. It also models leaving school with social background, demographic, school and attitudinal factors. This report is based on 1996 and 1997 data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth program. The data provides the most recent and comprehensive nationwide estimates of Year 10 and Year 11 students participating in work experience and workplace learning programs.
