The purpose of this study was to explore the academic outcomes of African- American (AA) male students in a single-gender classrooms in hopes of providing meaningful insight and as well as recommendations for intended further research to close the prevalent achievement gap. This study sought to understand the extent to which African-American males perceived their experiences in higher education as an impact of their persistence. With only 18 out of 40 African-American males graduating from college within six years (National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, 2008), this study sought to explore the problem of African-American male persistence in higher education. This dissertation explores the extent social capital and social networking impact student achievement in STEM within communities of divergent affluence and influence. The lack of parity of academic amenities within communities, including academic tutoring, math and science classes, and workshops tend to impede student achievement within the schoolhouse. Therefore, activities occurring within households result in each community’s ability to serve as either a bridge or a barrier to student academic success.
