Changes In One Teacher's Proportional Reasoning Instruction After Participating In A Cgi Professional Development Workshop, Jessica A. De La Cruz

Education Department Faculty Works

This study examined how one teacher used research-based knowledge of how adolescents think about proportions. Observations, interviews, document collection, and a workshop intervention were utilized. The design of the workshop was inspired by the cognitively guided instruction studies and its purpose was to explore the research findings on adolescents' thinking about proportions. An individual case study was created to describe the teacher's instruction related to proportion concepts, rationales for instructional decisions, beliefs, and changes in all of these areas after participating in the workshop intervention. The case presented here shows positive changes in the teacher's instruction and beliefs after the …

The participants were obtained from Waves I and II of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), a nationally representative ongoing survey of 7th through 12th grade students in the United States. A series of multilevel models using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM6) procedures were compared. Results did not support school connectedness as a moderator; however, results did support school connectedness as a …

As part of my honor's thesis project at Assumption College, I have been researching the ways that teachers are currently using tablets in their secondary mathematics classrooms. My thesis compares the benefits and drawbacks of having tablets in classrooms, tablets for every student, or no tablets at all. In the spring, I collected survey feedback from mathematics teachers in four different local school districts. I analyzed the data in order to determine the ways tablets are being used in classrooms, the reasons preventing teachers from fully integrating tablets into their instruction, the impacts training has had on tablet use, and …
