Promoted Online Tutorial Use In General Chemistry: Effects On Student Performance, Timothy D. Champion, John Bannister

SoTL Commons Conference

Promoting student success in entry-level STEM courses is a continuing area of interest. While JCSU has made great strides in this area, in 2016, data began to show an increase in the DFW rates for key courses. The urban small university where these studies were conducted provides students with an online tutorial service. While the success of tutoring is well-documented, it is our perception that students do not utilize this resource as often or as effectively as they might. This project increased student utilization of online tutoring and improved participating students’ test and quiz grades.

Three's Company: Collaborative Instructional Design On A Librarian-Instructor Team, Brittany L. O'Neill, Allen Leblanc, Deirdre Larsen

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

This session will describe a unique collaboration that resulted in development of a strategic research assignment design supported by relevant information literacy sessions. This effort stems from an existing relationship between research librarians and an instructor who was previously a graduate assistant in Research & Instruction Services and became an instructor of a general education course in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Through this collective, a synergistic arrangement developed where librarians contribute to research assignment design and the instructor contributes to developing the information literacy sessions to prepare students for finding, evaluating, and understanding relevant scholarly articles early in their college …

I Just Need Two Credits: Looking At Motivation When Redesigning An Online Credit-Bearing Information Literacy Course, Jane Hammons, Hanna Primeau, Diana Ramey, Stacey Mckenna

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Although a 2-credit hour information literacy course had high enrollment, with multiple sections offered each year across several campuses, course completion rates were not as high as hoped. Originally designed for freshman or sophomores, many upper-level students were enrolling in the course because they needed the credit hours, not because of interest in the course content, and overall engagement with the course material was low. With these concerns in mind, we undertook a team project to redesign the course. In this presentation, we will highlight the significant changes we made to course focus and content that were intended to increase …

What Does It Mean To Be Embedded?, Elena Rodriguez Sep 2018

What Does It Mean To Be Embedded?, Elena Rodriguez

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Having helped develop one type of Embedded Librarian Program at a Technical College, and then transitioning to a four-year college with an already established program, it has become more apparent that there is not one universal definition of an Embedded Librarian. The reason for these differences can be seen in the number of students and programs at an institution, the number of staff available, and other responsibilities that librarians have within their library organizations. What this shows is that careful consideration should be given when an academic library is considering starting their own Embedded Librarian Program to ensure their specific …

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine factors that contributed to student success in remedial education as perceived by faculty members and administrators at one public HBCU in the University System of Georgia. Each of these areas was represented in literature regarding the histories of remedial education programs and HBCUs, recent federal and state admissions and fiscal changes, and instructional best practices of remedial …
