To assist institutions in developing high quality middle level teacher preparation programs, five veteran members of the NCATE/NMSA Program Review Board have identified more than 75 performance-based assessments directly correlated with the seven NMSA Standards for Teacher Preparation. In this article, 14 of these assessments are described in detail along with a sampling of rubrics. In addition, authors reveal their own challenges writing program reports as well as gaining stakeholder’s buy-in to performance-based assessment systems at their own institutions.

Dr. Marshall outlines her belief that the current context and conditions of schooling are far too constrained, prescribed and risk-averse for our children’s imagination, and as a result, actually mitigate against innovative thinking and creative and collaborative problem-solving. Authentic learning is a live encounter. She feels that we cannot mandate, punish or test our children into greatness and provides recommendations for educational transformation--not reform--to design the educational experiences needed by today's children.

The Christian schools leader can also take advantage of the ideas that integrate so well into Biblical principles. The "Connections Through Clubs" program provides all students with the opportunity to participate in a small-group extracurricular activity and mentoring experience led by school faculty, staff, and community members during the school day throughout the academic year. Problem
Effective-schools research has demonstrated that a building level administrator’s leadership practices contribute to the success or failure of change efforts and impact school culture and student achievement. Research in this area has focused primarily on comparing high and low performing schools and the various antecedent/context variables of such schools. This study examined schools with annual achievement gains above and below the state’s average gain in student performance and sought to determine if there were significant differences in school antecedent/context variables, leadership practices, and mediating variables between these schools.
