Intrusive Advising And Retention Practices In A College Of Agriculture: A Case Study Of First-Year Student Experiences, Amanda Martin

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of first-year students who experienced intrusive advising and retention initiatives in the College of Agriculture at Louisiana State University (LSU). Research participants consisted of 20 first-year students enrolled in the college in the fall of 2018. One-on-one, face-to-face interviews with first-year students were conducted to gain insight and understand student experiences with intrusive advising and retention initiatives within the College of Agriculture. In recent years, School-Based Agricultural Education has been facing a shortage of secondary teachers, due in part to low retention rates of these valuable educators. In light of this shortage, a multitude of research has been conducted throughout the country on challenges faced by agricultural educators, some as indicators of intent to leave the profession. This thesis sought to synthesize the research conducted on job satisfaction, retention, and attrition of School-Based Agricultural Educators order to identify prevalent problems facing these teachers which may contribute to the decision to leave the classroom. Since the mid 1980s more than a dozen communities in Nebraska have carried out the Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program that is outlined in this handbook. Without exception both the communities and the businesses involved have reported positive results. The BRE program is a stuctured, locally implemented, action oriented economic development project aimed at stimulating local economic development ard growth by helping existing business. This handbook is designed as a guide for community leaders planning to carry out a Business Retention and Expansion program. Due to variations in local needs and resources, communities are encouraged to customize these tools.
