Using Design Thinking As An Instrument For School Improvement And Innovation In Public Schools, Beth Emery Peterson

Design thinking, a creative problem-solving method in which the end user is an active member of the design team, has historically been used in business and industry, but school leaders are beginning to use the process in education settings. This multiple-case study examined the experiences of two public school leaders who used design thinking for continuous improvement initiatives or to spur innovation in their school or district. Through interviews, the school leaders shared their purposes, outcomes, challenges, and insights of using design thinking to address complex educational problems. The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics associated with resilient school leaders. Principals juggle multiple responsibilities and work under increasingly stressful conditions. Despite recent role changes, added job responsibilities, and increased accountability, some principals remain remarkably resilient while working in a tumultuous environment. Using Henderson and Milstein's (2003) definition, principal resiliency was described as "the capacity to spring back, rebound, successfully adapt in the face of adversity, and develop social, academic, and vocational competence despite exposure to severe stress or simply to the stress that is inherent in today's world" (p. 7). The purpose of this Article is two-fold. First, the Article argues that the parent’s right to educate his or her children is strictly circumscribed by the parent’s duty to ensure that children learn habits of critical reasoning and reflection. The law has long recognized that the state’s duty to educate children is superior to any parental right. Indeed, the “parentalist” position to the contrary rests on an inflation of rights that is, in fact, a radical departure from longstanding legal norms. The two main purposes of this study were to document the events leading to the establishment of the nondiscriminatory employment policy for certificated personnel from ethnic minority groups in the Stockton Unified School District and the subsequent practices which have developed since the adoption of the policy in 1947.

This investigation is based upon the hypothesis that there is no true difference in academic achievement between two independent groups of students, permanent and in-transfer, in grades six through ten in the South Bend Schools of South Bend, Washington, when intelligence, age, sex and socio-economic factors are controlled.

The natural result of this increased population was to place an abnormal strain on the Merced City School facilities. In the last ten years the enrollment of the schools in this city has increased from a peak of 1773 to 3566 pupils.
The administrators of Merced City schools, in attempting to provide adequate facilities for the mounting enrollments, have in the last three years, with the support of the patrons of the district, financed and constructed six new school buildings. The improvement of school environment presents a different problem in each school. The problem facing the Ellensburg School District is one of providing more and better school housing. The purpose of this survey is to find out the condition of the present buildings, to make recommendations for improvements and alterations to the existing structures, to point out the needs for future building expansion. This survey is based on the results of an actual school census undertaken during November of this year.
