Nursing programs have traditionally used teacher-developed multiple-choice (MCQ) examinations to prepare students for licensure. Researchers have determined that poorly constructed MCQ tests used as formative and summative evaluations may penalize nursing students and impact progression and retention in nursing programs. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to examine issues related to the use of teacher-developed MCQ examinations as the only method of student assessment in the theory component of nursing courses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which environmental education (EE) programs are contributing to environmental quality (EQ) improvement. The research applied the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) environmental indicator framework to the reported outcomes of 103 EE programs in order to 1) determine the extent to which existing EE programs are reporting EQ improvement outcomes; and 2) examine the extent to which these programs are impacting indicators in the three areas of the PSR framework. This publication is an attempt to capture the evolution of distributed higher education over the last decade by tracing the applications of new technologies funded by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). As FIPSE surveyed the current state of distance/distributed education, there existed an opportunity to help post econdary education make the transition to this new generation of distance education made possible by the explosive growth of the Internet and other new technologies. Adult illiteracy in the United States is a grave national problem. One organization attempting to solve this problem is Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc., a private, non-profit organization with affiliates in nineteen states. A tutorial approach to instruction through the use of volunteers trained in teaching basic reading to adults on a one-to-one basis is the method employed in this effort. Volunteers are trained in an 18-hour workshop highlighting four basic techniques and their effective utilization: experience story, sight words, phonics, and phonics-in-pattern. In-services, follow-up sessions, and consultations with volunteer reading specialists are available to tutors. A tutor training manual …
