Dating Violence, Don't Ignore It!, Jeanne L. Surface, David Stader, Thomas Graca, Jerry Lowe
Educational Leadership Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Educational leaders have a substantial degree of control over students and generally have a tremendous influence on the decisions that they make. District administrators are already involved in comprehensive efforts to stem sexual harassment, teen violence and bullying; therefore, they may be well positioned to identify and address the problem of teen dating violence. Unfortunately, school district failure to take action is far too common, despite the statutory duty to ensure the safety of all students during school hours and at school sponsored events. School districts can be held liable for student dating violence under Title IX, under 42 U.S.C. …
Vocational Experiences Of Survivors Of Severe Tbi With Diverse Employment Patterns: An Explanatory Mixed Method Design, Erin J. Bush
Vocational Experiences Of Survivors Of Severe Tbi With Diverse Employment Patterns: An Explanatory Mixed Method Design, Erin J. Bush
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Employment status is a salient outcome following traumatic brain injury (TBI). A return to productive activity relates in complex ways to quality of life, and loss of employment competence has potentially devastating effects on survivors. Currently, inadequate information exists about the distribution of occupations held by survivors, post-injury employment stability, and the frequency that survivors return to their pre-injury occupations. The research presented herein addressed these issues. This study consisted of two phases. Through Phase 1, the researcher gathered quantitative employment data regarding a pool of 283 survivors of severe TBI. She then conducted telephone interviews of family members of …

The Spring 2011 Follow-Up Survey of Freshmen Who Entered Western in 2009 (2nd Year Survey) is part of a longitudinal effort to survey students with a goal to improve educational programs and provide self-assessment data. Together with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, OSR designed this survey in an attempt to shed light on the efficacy and satisfaction with first year and GUR programs. In addition, a number of campus offices submitted questions to help assess their programs. Among these are the Math Center, the Honors Program, Western Libraries, University Residences, Environmental Health and Safety, and the Renewable Energy Degree …

[Excerpt] Between 1980 and 1992, the enormous changes in economic development in Taiwan had significant impacts on the island's labour market. Examples of these changes include the island's almost legendary and meteoric economic growth, the maintenance of essentially full employment, an increase of around 116 per cent in real labour earnings, considerable upgrading of the educational qualifications of the labour force as a whole, a sustained and systematic shift in the composition of the labour force from agriculture into manufacturing and services and occupational upgrading (defined as the expansion of the share of the labour force in the better occupations, …
Career College Students' Perceptions Of Portfolios And Their Influence In The Hiring Process, Andrea J. Webb
Career College Students' Perceptions Of Portfolios And Their Influence In The Hiring Process, Andrea J. Webb
Master of Education Research Theses
Two-year college enrollment continues to increase to meet the challenges of our changing economy. Due to this increased enrollment, it has become quite evident that more research in the area of two-year colleges is needed. Many two-year colleges have their students complete a portfolio upon graduation, to assist them in the competitive job market. Does the portfolio really help students get jobs? The contents of this paper follow a mixed-method study that involves surveying graduates of two-year colleges as well as interviewing employers who frequently hire two-year college graduates. Graduates from a number of two-year colleges were asked to complete …

[Excerpt] In this chapter, I present a case study of a department at a large research university in which the use of non-tenured faculty increased dramatically over three decades. I begin by examining the historical sources of the expansion. I describe the arrangements that were implemented to resolve these problems. These arrangements exemplify many of the “best management practices” for non-tenure-track faculty mentioned earlier. Based on discussions with non-tenure-track and tenure-track department members and university administrators, I assess the effectiveness of these employment arrangements in resolving problems and the general consequences for the department of having a large contingent of …
Career Advancement: Ten Negotiation Strategies For Women In Higher Education, K. Betts
Career Advancement: Ten Negotiation Strategies For Women In Higher Education, K. Betts
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Women in the United States (US) are a vital part of the workforce and the economy. They represent 50.7 percent of the population and 49.8 percent of payroll employment in the US workforce. Women also outpace men in the number of college degrees conferred annually. However, women hold fewer board seats and executive level positions than men in American corporations and higher education institutions. Additionally, census data indicates that women earn approximately 77 cents on every dollar earned by men. Although the “glass ceiling” is getting lower, it is essential that women develop successful negotiation strategies for career advancement. This …
Gender, Education, Background And Career Progression: Case Study Of Radcliffe College Graduates, Jennifer O'Connor Duffy
Gender, Education, Background And Career Progression: Case Study Of Radcliffe College Graduates, Jennifer O'Connor Duffy
Jennifer O'Connor Duffy
This study explores the professional development of female graduates of Radcliffe College, an Ivy League college in the USA. A secondary statistical analysis of the 1977 Radcliffe Centennial Survey shows how changing social, political, institutional, and economic forces influenced the post-graduate career pathways of female alumnae. Independent of era, a Radcliffe degree could propel most women to the second tier professional status level of managers. Regardless of social class background, the women experienced similar career trajectories. However it was extremely rare for these women to climb to the highest step on the career ladder, indicating the difficulties of overcoming institutional …

Western Educational Longitudinal Study (Wels) Baseline Survey Of Transfers Entering Western In The Fall, 2010 - Addendum, John M. Krieg, Beth Hartsoch, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Grant Fosheim
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
The baseline survey of transfers is an annual survey of all transfer students entering Western in the Fall. This survey is fully explained and documented in “WELS Baseline Survey of Transfers Entering Western in the Fall, 2010” which may be found on the Office of Survey Research’s website (http://www.wwu.edu/socad/osr/). This addendum breaks down the data from that survey by college. Hopefully, this data will provide a finer degree of analysis allowing colleges greater lattitude in their self-evaluation efforts.

Data Note: Students With Autism: Setting Higher Expectations For Postsecondary Education, Alberto Migliore, Jaime Lugas
Data Note Series, Institute for Community Inclusion
Setting expectations and goals in high school is key for a successful transition into adulthood. Postsecondary education is a particularly important goal because higher levels of educational attainment are associated with increased quality of life, including better employment outcomes. Unfortunately, the transition plans of students with autism do not often include postsecondary education as a goal.

The WELS Baseline Survey of Transfers Entering Western in the Fall, 2010 (Transfer Survey) is the companion survey to the Office of Survey Research’s (OSR) survey of incoming freshmen. Together, these surveys elicit information from students prior to the start of their Western academic careers and provide an initial contact in a longitudinal survey design that follows students through graduation and into their initial years as alumni. The Transfer Survey is designed with three purposes in mind: (1) to provide baseline observations of students prior to their Western experience which can be used to forecast and enhance student success; (2) …

The Fall, 2010 Baseline Survey of Freshmen Entering Western continues the Office of Survey Research’s (OSR) efforts to collect information on all students prior to the start of their academic careers at Western Washington University. This survey represents the initial contact in a longitudinal process that makes possible additional inquiries of students at the end of their sophomore year, when they graduate from the university, and one to two years after graduation. The Freshmen Survey is designed with three purposes in mind: (1) to provide baseline observations of students prior to their Western experience which can be used to forecast …
