Civics and Citizenship Assessment
This paper includes analyses of the extent to which student attitudes toward corruption, authoritarian forms of government and disobedience to the law are influenced by different factors at the student and school level across six Latin American countries (Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico and Paraguay). Data from the international and regional assessments will be used in the analyses. Each attitude was measured with data collected with a regional questionnaire which addressed common regional aspects viewed as relevant for the Latin American region. Web-Based Simulation Games In Social Studies: A Media Analysis, Adam Barger

This article explored two complimentary frameworks for utilizing web-based simulation games in social studies classrooms and applied them in a media analysis of a popular web-based civics simulation. McCall’s (2014) practical framework and Raphael, Bachen, Lynn, Mckee, and Baldwin-Philippi’s (2010) approach provided a thorough construct for effectively evaluating and utilizing simulation games in social studies classrooms. The Redistricting Game (USC Annenberg Center, n.d.) is detailed in light of these frameworks and analyzed for potential instructional use.

In primary and secondary schools in Maine and across the country, classroom time devoted to civics and American political history, along with many humanities subjects, is under increasing pressure. William D. Adams argues that failure to teach these subjects is related to a decline in meaningful political participation and civic engagement of all kinds in the United States. He draws connections between a healthy democracy and democratic citizenship and the ability to think critically, to imagine alternatives, to advance the common good, and to feel empathy and respect for others that a robust humanities education encourages.
