A Basic Qualitative Research Study Using A Constructivist Lens: Using Technologies To Infuse The Art Museum Into A High School Visual Arts Curriculum, Laura R. James Ms.

Laura R James

While attending a district professional development seminar, I became shockingly aware of the lack of technology teachers were using in their classrooms. I decided to set up virtual visits to museums to allow high school students to look at and talk about art as if they were on a field trip. As an art teacher, I am faced with a limited budget to support my art curriculum, and field trips have never really been an option. Art museums have proven to be a valuable resource for art education curriculum. I started to research literature to find studies in which others …

Art History Remix [6th-8th Grade], Andrea Puentes

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

This unit is designed to get middle school students in an art classroom thinking about the central understanding that all contemporary art is an assemblage of previous artistic influences. Through the creation of an Art History Remix, in which students reimagine and recreate a famous work of art, students explore the essential question: “What makes art original?” In this unit, students conduct in progress critiques of personal artwork and analyze the original artwork of famous artists and peers. Students begin developing the skills necessary to communicate about their own artwork and the artwork of others through both written and spoken …

In Search Of The Artist: The Influences Of Commercial Interest On An Art School - A Narrative Analysis, Michael Leonard Sette

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current study will investigate how identities and roles of the artist converge with competing identities and roles fostered at the institutional level within an art college as revealed through the marketing literature that they produce to attract students and business partnerships. The sociological focus for this proposal is the tension between art as a creative expressive endeavor and art as a commodity that has entered into social transactions unintended by the original expression of the artist. The researcher documents and describes (via narrative analysis) how an art school negotiates competing relationships between the pressures to teach and promote art …

Inoperative Art Education, Nadine M. Kalin, Daniel T. Barney

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Increasingly, assessment has encroached on art education, inextricably linking visual arts learning to standardized performances wherein, art educators are becoming technicians accountable to the neoliberal state of education. Under these circumstances, the authors’ hearts and minds are understandably heavy for a postponement of art education as usual, proposing the question: Given the permission to escape art education’s current workings, what might art educators abandon, and how might they undertake this? IN order to delve into this provocation, the authors propose a limbo space of deferral in relation to art education that might inspire any predetermined usages inoperable. From this paradoxical …

The Coupling Of The Visual Arts With The Core Curriculum, Victoria Anne Beagle Jan 2014

The Coupling Of The Visual Arts With The Core Curriculum, Victoria Anne Beagle

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of the relationship between the visual arts and the core subjects in American public education, and how this relationship has changed over time. Additional aims of the study included how visual arts educators have positioned the visual arts in relationship to the core subjects since the visual arts entered public education. An initial examination of the current state of art education reveals the tenuous position it holds in 8America's schools. After identifying the four dominant paradigm shifts in art education during the twentieth century, each paradigm was examined through the …
