Alumni Giving From Online Learners: A Logistic Regression Study, Jaqlyne S. Jackson
Alumni Giving From Online Learners: A Logistic Regression Study, Jaqlyne S. Jackson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alumni giving is increasingly important to the vitality of institutions of higher education. With governmental financial support of public institutions steadily declining, understanding philanthropic giving is more important than ever. Advancement offices that serve alumni populations benefit from analyzing predictors of the behavioral phenomenon of charitable giving. It is also known that enrollment in distance education programs is on the rise in the United States. For university administrators and advancement professionals to be proactive in cultivating relationships with alumni that attended through an online modality, more research was needed to understand what motivates philanthropic giving from this alumni constituency. Using …

A Lifelong Network: Perceptions And Experiences Of First-Generation Alums After Graduation, Allison Toney
A Lifelong Network: Perceptions And Experiences Of First-Generation Alums After Graduation, Allison Toney
Theses and Dissertations
As first-generation students transition to college graduates, the question lies in whether institutions of higher education are continuing to provide opportunities for them as alums. As a result of first-generation college students being the first in their family to attend college, students may enter college not knowing what to expect. But institutions have evolved to provide services, resources and opportunities that support their success while enrolled. Upon graduation, the process of transitioning out of college can be a challenging time for students as they seek post-graduation success. Some institutions offer support and resources tailored specifically to first-generation graduates or graduates …
Decline In Student Enrollment, Parental Willingness To Consider Catholic Schools, And Sources Of Comparative Advantage In The United States, Quentin Wodon
Journal of Global Catholicism
Enrollment in Catholic schools has been declining in the United States for half a century due among others to a lack of affordability resulting from legal barriers to access public funding, a potential weakening of the perception of excellence associated with the schools, and a trend towards secularization magnified by the sexual abuse crisis in the Church. What could Catholic schools do to stem the decline in enrollment? There are no easy answers, and there is also no single perspective on how to improve Catholic schools and make them more attractive to a larger number of parents. To suggest some …

Evaluating Alumni Perceptions Of Reciprocity With Their Alma Mater, Courtney Geurink
Evaluating Alumni Perceptions Of Reciprocity With Their Alma Mater, Courtney Geurink
Culminating Experience Projects
A reciprocal relationship is based on a mutual exchange of goods, services, and support. Within the work of an alumni relations office, building and facilitating reciprocity between alumni and their alma mater summarizes the work. However, stereotypically, the relationship an alumnus/alumna has with their alma mater would not be described as reciprocal. Rather, it may be seen as single-sided, the university constantly asking alumni for their time, talent, and treasure. Thus, this qualitative, exploratory study utilized alumni interviews to determine the perception alumni have of their relationship with their alma mater. The study results suggest alumni do perceive their relationship …

College Leadership Opportunities' Impact On Life During And After College, Mark Anthony Pietrowski Jr.
College Leadership Opportunities' Impact On Life During And After College, Mark Anthony Pietrowski Jr.
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the personal experiences of 14 individuals who engaged in leadership opportunities during their college educations. Through in-depth interviews, this study sought to explore how those leadership experiences impacted their leadership, both in their careers and/or in the community, after their graduation from both 2 and 4-year institutions. Findings from this study indicate that participants identified that their leadership experiences had impacts upon their careers and leadership after graduation. Yet, participants also shared that they engaged in leadership because they were self-motivated to do so, rather than learning about these opportunities on their campus. The final finding indicated …

Factors And Characteristics Of Alumni Role Identity: Implications For Practice In Higher Education Fundraising And Alumni Relations, Jay Le Roux Dillon
Factors And Characteristics Of Alumni Role Identity: Implications For Practice In Higher Education Fundraising And Alumni Relations, Jay Le Roux Dillon
Doctoral Dissertations
Now more than ever, colleges and universities are relying on funds raised from alumni to support their operations. At the same time, the percentage of alumni donors is in decline and new research suggests that higher education fundraising strategies are overly reliant on alumni behaviors and demographics as predictors of giving. A 2011 study by McDearmon addressed this issue by establishing a psychometric measure of a graduate’s self-identification with his or her role as an alumnus/a, dubbed “alumni role identity.” Based in role identity theory (Stryker 1968, 1980; Callero, 1985), McDearmon’s research demonstrated that alumni role identity was associated positively …

The Role Of Institutional Relations With Alumni Major Donors In Evangelical Higher Education, Brian Gardner
The Role Of Institutional Relations With Alumni Major Donors In Evangelical Higher Education, Brian Gardner
Dissertations
American higher education has never been more expensive. Its continued excellence and accessibility depends even more today on charitable subsidy. As previous beneficiaries of that charitable subsidy, alumni are the most logical benefactor of its sustenance. The relatively few alumni who can give most generously make the difference in the success of any fund raising effort. Understanding the motivation of alumni major gift prospects to give such gifts is therefore critical to securing them.
This study seeks to understand 1) the strategies and processes institutions employ in engaging alumni major donors, 2) the motivations of these donors to give or …
Successful Community College Alumni Programs, Monica S. Boyd, Mitchell R. Williams, Kevin Pennington
Successful Community College Alumni Programs, Monica S. Boyd, Mitchell R. Williams, Kevin Pennington
Educational Foundations & Leadership Faculty Publications
As state funding for community colleges continues not to keep pace with programming needs, more community colleges are taking the initiative to seek funding from private sources. Four-year colleges and universities have long used alumni programs as major outside sources of funding. Since a high percentage of today's students embark on their higher education experience at the community college, it is natural for more two-year institutions to begin alumni programs. Based on in-depth interviews with directors of successful community college alumni programs, this article suggests "best practices" for community colleges that are considering the development of an alumni program. It …
