Active Learning For The Millennial Generation, Amy Harris

The article discusses the need for active learning in library instruction classes that have Millenial or Generation Y students who have short attention spans and prefer education in entertaining forms. To promote learning, such students reportedly have to be actively engaged with the material for them to do worthwhile research. It is stated that one teacher divided her class into small groups and let the students become the leaders, while she took the role of a student, which allowed her to raise points to direct the flow of the instruction.

Planning time for giving students effective feedback is an important and challenging aspect of the teaching and learning process. In our article we describe and analyze how we engage students as partners in providing formative feedback in time for students to modify their own thinking or behavior to improve learning. We have found ways to provide formative feedback more frequently and to involve students in providing effective formative feedback to each other. The four techniques we describe are the following: a) three-color group quiz with feedback on product, process, and progress; b) midterm student conferencing; c) shared revision of student …

The use of Audience Response Systems (ARS) or 'clickers' as an active learning strategy in nursing education has been steadily on the rise. ARS technology allows the dynamic engagement of students in the classroom by providing immediate two-way communication between faculty and students. ARS can be used to explore knowledge and common misconceptions, act as a springboard for classroom discussions, and can be used for testing or evaluation. Utilizing student-centered pedagogy, this case study explores an increasingly prominent and instructive addition to traditional academic coursework - the field study experience. This is particularly true in the arena of environmental education where students learn best by experiencing environmental problems first-hand and then interacting with those involved. From a teaching methods and styles perspective, then, this paper espouses a mix of experiential and active learning strategies. The central message of this essay, however, is curriculum-based, to report on an engaging two-week field trip to examine sustainable development in the Dominican Republic. This project examines an online system for tracking class participation points. The system addresses two primary issues: how to quantify class participation and how to report class participation. This will serve all stakeholders: for students and parents, quantifying participation conveys a sense of objectivity (crucial if participation is to be fairly included in the grade) ; for teachers, the daily collection and collation of partcipation data ensures that the data is reliable, i.e., worthy of including in a student's grade.

Project CHILD (Changing How Instruction for Learning is Delivered) provides an avenue for educational change using a triangulated approach. Using data from the Florida Department of Education, this research studies the Project CHILD learning approach on preparing students for success on portions of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) using results from fifteen charter schools in the state of Florida, seven participating in Project CHILD and eight non-participating charter schools for the 2008-2009 school-year.
