Effect Of Multinational Projects On Engineering Students Through A Summer Exposure Research Program, Mehul S. Raval, Tolga Kaya

This paper studies and quantifies the impact of active learning experienced through multinational projects. The hypothesis was engineering education delivered through Active Learning in multicultural environment improves student competencies. The investigation captures the impact of international exposure program in developing global competencies of the modern engineer. The paper shows positive trends in the development of domain and life skills of engineering students. Post-survey after six months of completion of the program revealed that the program was valuable to students and their motivation increased.

Our latest collaborative research has primarily focused on studying challenges for digital pedagogy in promoting active learning and learner autonomy. These action research projects have been anchored in foreign language contexts in higher education settings. Here is a summary of two projects from 2014-2015: 1) With the goal of enhancing teaching practices in foreign language classrooms, the research project analyzed the use of student created videos to promote active learning. Active learning is broadly defined as a learning context in which the student takes charge rather than being a passive receiver. Teaching practices in the foreign language classroom can be enhanced by incorporating student created videos in order to promote this active learning. Based upon a case study of three activities involving student created videos to learn Spanish in an undergraduate curriculum, we identify key characteristics of active learning, such as the following: applying learning to the real world, contributing to and benefiting from a connected learning network, moving toward autonomy, and lastly, applying self-assessment as part of critical analysis. …
