From Pre-College Grads To Undergrads: Encouraging Full-Time Enrollment After Summer Programs, Meghan Buckley Ph.D. May 2024

From Pre-College Grads To Undergrads: Encouraging Full-Time Enrollment After Summer Programs, Meghan Buckley Ph.D.

Journal of College Access

This guest perspective argues that converting in-person summer pre-college program participants into matriculated, degree-seeking undergraduate students at that same institution is a multi-step process that involves: 1) strategic pre-college program recruitment, 2) a curated and well-rounded summer pre-college experience that is both academically rigorous and socially dynamic, and 3) continued and consistent post-program engagement. It also argues that summer pre-college programs should work intentionally with Admissions departments during pre- and post-program development to create the most effective recruiting and enrollment pipelines from pre-college to eventual matriculation

Creative Writing Pedagogy: Building Curriculum For High School Students, Elizabeth Lengel May 2024

Creative Writing Pedagogy: Building Curriculum For High School Students, Elizabeth Lengel

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis serves as a rationale for the creative writing pedagogy I use and how it serves my high school creative writing class. As my school district made the decision to overhaul our English curriculum, the English department decided to add Creative Writing as an English class elective.

The work for planning these new classes was spread around the English Department, and I was assigned to design the curriculum for the new Creative Writing class. Designing an entire class from scratch leaves a lot of room for creativity and innovation. However, as excited for this new course as I was, …

Development Of A Solution Concept Inventory For The High School Chemistry Classroom, Grace Tetschner May 2024

Development Of A Solution Concept Inventory For The High School Chemistry Classroom, Grace Tetschner

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Many high school chemistry students struggle to learn the chemistry of solutions because they hold alternate conceptions—beliefs that differ from scientifically accepted ideas—related to the topics covered in a traditional solution unit. For this reason, high school chemistry teachers would benefit from the development of a Solution Concept Inventory (SCI)—a multiple-choice assessment that could be used in the high school classroom to identify student alternate conceptions on the concept of solutions. In this study, common solution-related alternate conceptions were identified, items for an SCI were developed, an analysis was performed to determine the quality of the items, and validity evidence …

Teaching College In The High School: Unique Features And Challenges Of Site-Based Dual Enrollment, Paul Williams Apr 2024

Teaching College In The High School: Unique Features And Challenges Of Site-Based Dual Enrollment, Paul Williams

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

After a sharp decline associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, 2023 marked two consecutive years of increase in the number of freshman and high-school dual enrollees, with under-18-year-olds driving a disproportionate share of this growth. The rising importance of this latter student group presents new opportunities for colleges as well as underappreciated challenges rooted precisely in the high-school locale of concurrent Dual Enrollment courses. While some known stumbling blocks to effective college-level instruction for high school students are inherent in the age and lower maturity levels of the dominant age cohort, others stem from matters beyond the control of students and …

Seasonal Shifts In Jumping Patterns: A Study Of Countermovement Jump Strategies In High School Football Athletes, Alexa L. Lobato, Samuel T. Lauman, Lindsey C. Hartland, Lucy H. Phan, John P. Abt

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Modern sporting trends have begun to adopt sport science and load monitoring to identify in-season trends with the goal of improving performance and reducing injury. Although these resources have become increasingly common in professional and collegiate sports, many high school athletic programs have yet to adopt such technologies. While previous research has demonstrated season-long changes in jump performance, no research has investigated the impact of in-season demands on the changes in jump strategy in male high school football athletes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine changes in jump strategy in high school football players over a …

Countermovement Jump Performance Trends In High School Football Players Throughout A Competitive Season, Samuel T. Lauman, Alexa L. Lobato, Lindsey C. Hartland, Lucy H. Phan, John P. Abt Feb 2024

Countermovement Jump Performance Trends In High School Football Players Throughout A Competitive Season, Samuel T. Lauman, Alexa L. Lobato, Lindsey C. Hartland, Lucy H. Phan, John P. Abt

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Football is the largest participation sport amongst male high school athletes in the country with over one million participants. Previous research has demonstrated that countermovement jump (CMJ) performance is negatively affected by in-season fatigue in contact sports such as rugby and hockey. However, little data are available to describe how CMJ performance and force metrics change in high school athletes throughout a competitive football season. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in strength and power metrics in high school football players over a single football season. METHODS: Sixty-nine male high school football athletes …

An additional purpose was to identify methods that could be used to reduce such stress. Herzberg’s theory of motivation, which outlines how job factors motivate workgroups, was used to …

AN EXPOSITORY ANALYSIS OF TEXTBOOK USAGE IN CLASSICAL SETTINGS FOR HIGH SCHOOL BIOLOGY

Kristen Bissontz

Southeastern University, Lakeland FL

The classical model of education has reemerged as a viable alternative to the modern education system. Many of the disciplines taught in a classical school, program or home education scenario appear to align with the classical philosophy with the exception of the sciences. This paper serves to uncover if textbooks are the primary source in classical settings, what resources are utilized, and offers suggestions to better align with the classical pedagogy.

A small sample of classical schools and programs in a …

Teachers’ Conceptions Of Students’ Data Literacy In Life Science And Physical Science Classes, Bridget Nicole Smith Jan 2024

Teachers’ Conceptions Of Students’ Data Literacy In Life Science And Physical Science Classes, Bridget Nicole Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Data literacy in science is an evolving field of study as students need to be able to collect, analyze, interpret, and make inferences from different sources of data. Much research centers on teachers' use of data to improve instructional practices, but less focus on teachers' conceptions of student data literacy and strategies used to foster data literacy in life and physical science high school classes. Thus, there is a need to address this area as recent Georgia assessments reveal that over 50% of students are performing below proficiency level in science. Consequently, this research sought to understand teachers’ conceptions of …
