The Most Important Voices In The Room: Understanding The Academic Needs Of Us-Educated Latino English Learners In Higher Education, Lisa Davenport
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
US-educated English learners (US-ELs) immigrated to the United States as children and enrolled in school where they began learning English. Ultimately, they graduate from high school, and the majority of those wishing to continue in higher education begin in community college. These students face tremendous barriers and have lower rates of access to and completion of higher education than English monolingual students.
The study examines the transitions of US-ELs from high school to community college in the years since the implementation of California Assembly Bills 705 and 1705 and the COVID-19 pandemic. The researcher used three theoretical frameworks – LatCrit, …
Exploring The Nexus Of Community College Faculty And The Actual Application Of Generative Artificial Intelligence Technologies In Courses And Syllabi, Jamie Pang
Dissertations
This study's basis was examining the specific pairing of higher education and Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technologies. In a quantitative analysis, this study looked at the convergence and relationship between community college faculty characteristics, perceptions, …

Pedagogical Development For Non-Degreed Career And Technical Education Adjunct Faculty: A Phenomenological Study, Robert M. Huffman
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study is to explore how non-degreed career and technical adjunct faculty members nourish their pedagogical skillsets so that they can teach at the community college level. Throughout this research study, nourishment of pedagogical skillsets is generally defined as professional development. The theories guiding this study are Mezirow’s transformational learning theory as it focuses on transitioning into a new role, and Tinto’s theory of dropout, as it focuses on persistence and success. This qualitative study employs Moustakas’ transcendental phenomenology research design. The qualitative research design was chosen due to the nature of the purpose …

Motivation, Learning, And The Workplace: A Study Of Community College Student Affairs Professionals And Continued Professional Learning, Joseph M. Ginese
Theses and Dissertations
Continued professional learning is a consistent focus of attention for the field of student affairs within higher education. Yet, very little research has been conducted on the factors that influence the motivation of student affairs professionals to pursue continued professional learning, especially professionals within community colleges. This study utilized a quantitative research design to examine the physical and psychological factors of the work environment that can influence a community college student affairs professional’s motivation to pursue continued professional learning. Through the theoretical lens of Lewin’s Field Theory and Eccles’ Expectancy-Value Theory, I designed a 58-item survey (N = 41) …

Four-year higher education institutions (HEIs) nationwide must become more transfer friendly so that more community college transfer (CCT) students persist and complete their bachelor’s degrees, as a path to more students’ economic mobility and to equity across communities. This study aims to provide learnings to support achievement of this imperative. The research question studied here is: What is the relationship between community college transfer (CCT) student support strategies at a four-year higher education institution (HEI) and the first-to-second-year retention of CCT students at their four-year HEI? Through quantitative analysis of a broad set of variables’ ability to predict student retention …
