Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: COVID-19 and its associated restrictions called for innovations in higher education teaching and learning space with many universities resorting to online teaching and alternative assessments. However, little has been done to understand the academic integrity implications in alternative online and non-invigilated assessments. Aim: This study explored the perceptions of higher education students regarding academic integrity in alternative assessments. Methods: Cross-sectional mixed method design following the parallel convergent approach was utilised in this study. A convenience sample of 380 undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and social science students completed an online survey on academic integrity behaviours associated with alternative assessments. The Unstoppable Rise Of Ai: An Interview With Dr. John Sanford, Spencer Burrows, And Anna Birchler, Brandon Powell, Spencer Burrows

International Journal of Emerging and Disruptive Innovation in Education : VISIONARIUM

AI can both help and hurt the education field (higher education and secondary education). Despite Hollywood’s depiction of artificial intelligence solely in the form of killer death robots decades into the future, AI is much more versatile - and far more dangerous - than any killer robot could be. As artificial intelligence develops at a breakneck pace, its effect on our society will increase exponentially.

Standards-Referenced Grading Assessments: Frequency And Student Preferance, Courtney Waterbury

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this action research was to investigate whether a noticeable difference in student performance could be identified when using end of unit assessments versus smaller frequent assessments after a lesson. The researcher conducted this study in a high school general education classroom with five sections of an American History course. The action research project took the scores from three standards and compared the results of all students who took the assessment after a lesson for one unit as well as at the end of a unit for the other unit. The findings showed a trend of students preforming …

Science Assessments As A Learning Opportunity: Feedforward With Multiple Attempts, Emily Faulconer Mar 2023

Science Assessments As A Learning Opportunity: Feedforward With Multiple Attempts, Emily Faulconer

Publications

Feedback best practices support timely, high-quality feedback with application opportunity. Multiple attempts on assessments support learning gains. A learning management system can be used to automatically provide feedback for application on a future assessment attempt. Current research has not thoroughly investigated the student impacts or opinions on this combined strategy. In this study, students took a second attempt 46% of the time, scoring an average of 10.1% higher on their second attempt. More than 60% of students who failed their first attempt completed a second attempt. Students perceived the feedback as useful in preparing for their second attempt. Future research …

Standards-Based Grading At The Secondary Level: A Phenomenological Study Of District Level Administrators And Their Perceptions Of Transitioning From A Traditional Grading System, Timothy D. Mccarthy

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional grading practices have been in place for well over a hundred years and grades received served to identify in which subjects a student is “smart” or in which ones they are not (Dewitt, 2017). The problem with traditional grading is that it does not provide qualitative information on the difference between an A, B, C, D, or F (Scriffiny, 2008). Standards-based grading allows the communication of where a student is in relation to well-defined standards. The problem is that many schools do not implement a standards-based grading and reporting system at the secondary level. This is in light of …
