High-impact educational practices outlined by the Association of American Colleges and Universities give faculty a toolkit of specific practices that current research identifies as having particular effectiveness in student engagement and learning in the 21st century. Included in this list of effective practices is undergraduate research. While this high-impact educational practice is most often associated with the sciences, it has wider applicability to undergraduate learning where the methods of research can integrate synergistic strategies that further enhance student engagement and learning: place-based learning and interdisciplinary teaching. This essay focuses on the use of inquiry and counter-witnessing as a means of understanding our teaching identities, vulnerability, and productivity in the era of COVID-19. Based on our experiences as teacher educators at three separate institutions of higher education, we have come to value counter-telling and validating. As we share in this essay, working in COVID-19 has taught us, once again, that we must find, and model, courage and self-acceptance. Teachers are the key to shifting the way learning happens in the classroom. However, teachers are not always skilled in inquiry, critical thinking, and historical impact. Teaching with primary sources provides a context from which to educate preservice teachers in these essential skills. This educator resource describes an activity which encourages children to explore ideas about plants in an outdoor environment. They build on their understanding of what a plant is by drawing one and then go outdoors to find examples of plants (a ‘treasure hunt’). This activity allows children to learn about different examples of plants other than flowers, or plants that are grown in a pot. Children often discount other examples of plants such as trees, grass and vegetables. The activity is linked to the Australian Curriculum (Foundation to Year 2) and provides teacher notes about the scientific classification of plants.

It is also suitable for preschoolers to help overcome common misconceptions about shadow formation. F–2 students should be encouraged to explain why shadows are formed as well as describe them. Preschoolers should be given the opportunity to describe and explain shadows too. This resource provides an explanation of how shadows are formed and guidelines about how to teach these scientific concepts.

“Bad Inquiry”: How Accountability, Power, And Deficit Thinking Hinder Pre-Service Practitioner Inquiry, Stephanie Schroeder

This study of 30 pre-service teachers’ practitioner inquiry papers explores potential pitfalls of practicing inquiry with pre-service teachers. Focusing on the types of questions pre-service teachers ask about student learning, the challenges they face when engaging in inquiry, and the weaknesses of their inquiry products, this paper finds that accountability culture in education, pre-service teachers’ lack of power in the classroom, and deficit thinking left unchallenged by instructors led to weak inquiries. Using The 5e Instructional Model In An Online Environment With Pre-Service Special Education Teachers, Delinda Van Garderen, Mary Decker, Rachel Juergensen, Heba Abdelnaby

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

In this practitioner article, we describe the innovative way the 5E Instructional Model was used in an online, hybrid special education undergraduate course to prepare pre-service teachers to teach academic content to their students with disabilities. We provide a rationale for the use of the model in the course, describe how we implemented the model in the course, teachers’ perceptions about the model as a way to facilitate and model the process of learning for themselves and students, and discuss implications for practice.

This multiple case study focused on a research science dually-enrolled program of study and the unique challenges rural school educators face due to a lack of human and social capital. Some geographically-isolated rural secondary schools strategically use dual-enrollment programs to develop stronger social capital networks and communities of practice. Participants included five science research educators from rural, geographically-isolated secondary schools. Each case was examined individually, which allowed the researcher to explore the phenomenon within the context of the rural school research science teaching and learning environment. Analyzing Students' Historical Thinking Skills At Different Grade Levels, Aaron Callaway

The purpose of this research study is to compare and contrast the historical thinking abilities of students in distinct age-groups through their use of disciplinary literacy skills. This was accomplished by having eight total subjects from four distinct student age-groups participate in a guided inquiry activity about the beginning of the Korean War. As they engaged in the inquiry activity, the participants’ cognitive process and responses to the researcher’s questions were recorded and transcribed and later analyzed. These transcriptions were juxtaposed with one another in search of any major patterns that emerged during the inquiries. Several patterns were identified including …
