Digital information is omnipresent, and access is almost unavoidable. Technology advances and comes at us in waves that take over and then tend to linger. iGen is the first generation to be born into this advanced technology and the state of constant “plugged-inness” to the Internet. iGen has not experienced a different, predominantly analog, world, but baby boomers, generation X, and millennials – many of whom now use Internet-connected technology heavily – can attest to how they have changed as it integrated into their lives. Generation Z, born 1996-2010 (McNeil, 2018) or iGeneration has always had instant access to the internet, Ipods, and iphones to retrieve and transmit information that could have a strong influence on their learning style. This paper will review Generation Z learning preferences from the literature and report on a study of Generation Z business students (N = 91) in a liberal arts university. Some comparisons are made to a 2008 study of Millennials (N = 102). For example, long term papers that were rated as unimportant by 17% Millennials regarded as even less important to Gen Z by 29%.

Student-Faculty Interactions As Predictors Of Retention And Satisfaction Among Generation Z College Students, Stephani Jarecke

Student retention has historically been an important discussion in higher education. While the importance of student retention remains, a new generation of students have filled colleges and universities. This study examines how interactions with faculty influence Generation Z college students’ overall satisfaction and student retention. The quantitative study used the NSSE survey instrument at a public land-grant institution in the Midwest. The results of a Mann-Whitney U analysis indicated a significant difference in student satisfaction reported between students who returned to the same institution the following year and students who did not return. Effective integration of new generations of employees has been a problem for organizations for decades, resulting in high turnover, increased costs, and lowered revenue. Generation Z (Gen Z) has recently entered the workforce and is experiencing the same ineffective integration practices as prior generations, with characteristics and expectations that conflict with current work climates.
