Special Education Services In Private Faith-Based And Nonsectarian Elementary Schools, Craig W. Bartholio
The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community
The purpose of this study was to investigate the existence of specialized support and services designed for students with disabilities in faith-based and nonsectarian elementary schools (n=57). An questionnaire was used to explore if there is a difference in how different faith tradition (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish) and nonsectarian affiliated elementary schools addressed the needs of enrolled students with identified disabilities. From 2006 to 2015, enrollment of students with a disability in a private school setting has increased from 1.0% to 1.4%. Today thousands of individuals and families are unemployed or underemployed and are seeking ways to combat poverty and become employed. One way that individuals seek to gain employment is by attending job skills training and adult education programs. However, there are barriers that hinder those individuals from successfully completing the programs. The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of applicants of a nonprofit job skills training program called FaithWorks and explore the reasons why applicants were not able to continue and, or complete the program. Teachers are the very foundation of a successful educational program. High rates of teacher attrition threaten the core mission of small, private, non-Catholic, faith-based secondary schools—to transform students spiritually, intellectually, and personally. It is vital that the faculty at these schools is comprised of quality teachers who return year-to-year to deepen relationships with students and continue the momentum of student transformation.
