Empowering Rural Participation And Partnerships In Morocco’S Sustainable Development, Yossef Ben-Meir
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This essay explores the vast potential for participatory and sustainable human development in Morocco. Though Morocco is a country with many diverse resources, it remains burdened by severe levels of poverty and illiteracy, and now growing social discord. There have recently been increased public calls for participatory development programs designed and implemented by and for local people. The essay identifies six existing Moroccan Frameworks intended to initiate decentralized human development programs, and critically examines their efficacy. Ultimately, the purpose of the article is to suggest a new model to implement these Frameworks with maximum impact. The six Frameworks deal with …
Elementary Student Engagement Through Stem Lessons, Leigh Blankenship
Elementary Student Engagement Through Stem Lessons, Leigh Blankenship
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects can be engaging for students and can help build real-world connections. Integration of STEM disciplines can also promote student engagement, as well as promote problem-solving and critical thinking skills. This action research study employed qualitative methods to investigate whether student participation in content areas changes when integrated STEM lessons are introduced in an elementary classroom. The participants of this study were nine students in a fourth-grade rural elementary classroom. Data sources included student surveys, a teacher journal, student work samples, and student interviews before and after each STEM lesson over a three-month …

Latino Parent School Involvement: Do Parents Read And Respond To Teacher Invitations?, Celia Marquez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Latinos are the second largest ethnic group after Whites in the education system, yet there is still a large gap between Whites’ and Latino’s graduation rates. Research indicates that parental involvement in children’s education plays a significant role in children’s academic success. For this reason, this study aims to understand Latino parents’ perspectives on their participation in their child’s school. More specifically, how often Latino parents receive invitations from the school and whether or not they respond to these invitations. The research design for this study is exploratory and qualitative and uses one-on-one interviews with Latino parents. The central themes …
Barriers To Bilingual: How Students Participate In Spanish And English Classes, Bailey Strahan
Barriers To Bilingual: How Students Participate In Spanish And English Classes, Bailey Strahan
Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning
While participation has been linked to achievement in the classroom, various external factors can change students’ willingness to participate. In this study the researcher sought to discover what participation looks like in regards to one of these factors, language. Additionally the researcher wanted to discover what students and teachers in a bilingual program thought of their own participation in regards to language. Through the use of surveys, interviews, and observations over the course of several weeks, the researcher was able to determine that many factors including student motivation, preferences, resources available, and misunderstanding all contribute to their willingness to participate …
Using Social-Emotional Learning To Help Behavioral Problems, Hannah Taylor Byrd
Using Social-Emotional Learning To Help Behavioral Problems, Hannah Taylor Byrd
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This Capstone Project focused on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) to help manage behavioral problems that students may face. A class of 25 fourth-grade students attending a public K-5 school participated in this Capstone Project. SEL teachings were condensed into a four-week lesson plan which focused on various skills, catered to help this class’ specific deficits. To match the students’ needs, the lessons were designed to promote positive participation and raise self-esteem so students feel comfortable sharing out during discussions. The students learned what perseverance and encouragement meant to them and participated in activities relating to these skills. By the end of …
Treating Participation As An Assignment, Brandon Bosch
Treating Participation As An Assignment, Brandon Bosch
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Participation is a funny thing. Some of us grade it obliquely, bumping up the final grades for students that were truly exceptional at it. Some of us explicitly state on the syllabus how important it is for students to come to class “ready and willing to participate,” but only allocate 10% of the overall grade to this supposedly valued activity. But perhaps the most common thing that we do as instructors with participation is this: despite the fact that participation is one of the most commonly “submitted” activities in a class, very few instructors treat participation like an actual assignment. …

The Qualitative Report
The main objective of this research is to analyse the Plan for Coexistence at a Spanish Secondary School and its implementation from the perspective of an inclusive model of school management. Beginning with a theoretical review of different national and international contributions centred on inclusive education and the improvement of school coexistence, we have chosen a qualitative methodology that will enable us to listen and to give a voice to the main members of the school community: students and teachers. We show how the Citizenship Plan follows an inclusive focus, enhancing the participation of the whole community in the different …

The Relationship Between Young Alumni Participation And Giving, Glenn Kosse
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
This study sought to determine the relationship between young alumni participation in alumni association sponsored events and young alumni giving through the research questions (a) is there a relationship between young alumni participation and giving to the university?; and (b) is the giving behavior of young alumni who are donors to the university affected by attendance at alumni association events?
This study utilized a univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) analysis with three separate dependent variables: pre-event giving, post-event giving, and total giving. The independent variables were factors describing specific young alumni behaviors: (a) attend but do not give, (b) do …
The Retention Of Adult Sport Participants: The Challenge Of Player Ratings, Edward Horne, Matthew Brown
The Retention Of Adult Sport Participants: The Challenge Of Player Ratings, Edward Horne, Matthew Brown
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The current study investigates the retention of competitive tennis players in the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA’s) adult league system to answer the following questions: What factors do participants identify as impactful to their participation in adult league tennis? How do participants believe these factors impact their retention? Results suggest participants believe the current system fails to incentivize development as competitors fail to transition successfully to a higher rating and struggle socializing into a new team. Competitors therefore seek to cheat the system. The current study illustrates the importance for league policymakers to consider unintended consequences and provides recommendations. Subscribe …

Best Practices For Teaching Discussion As Part Of High School Common Core State Standards, Mitchel Stengel, Leah Nolan, David Donnick, Wesley Skym, Anna M. Wright
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Instructional discussion is a teaching method used in many classrooms across grade levels. In fact, the Common Core State Standards promote the use of instructional discussion in secondary classrooms (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2018a). Students, however, are not always taught best practices for engaging in a discussion and may feel unprepared to participate. As a result, discussions may not produce the dynamic learning opportunity they are intended to foster. This essay provides 10 tips for high school teachers to prepare students in the high school classroom to engage in a meaningful classroom discussion effectively in order to ensure students …
