An Exploration Of Motivational Interviewing And Strengths-Based Supervision To Improve Client Session Attendance, Jeremy Abel
An Exploration Of Motivational Interviewing And Strengths-Based Supervision To Improve Client Session Attendance, Jeremy Abel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Clients missing outpatient psychotherapy sessions is a problem that impacts clients, clinicians, and clinics. Scholarly research has shown that clinicians’ use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) may help to increase attendance rates and that most often MI training is done through a single training or workshop, which may not be a sufficient means to adequately prepare clinicians to effectively use MI. The purpose of this study was to determine whether using every other week, MI-focused, strength-based group supervision after an initial MI training can increase client attendance in two community outpatient substance use disorder and mental health treatment clinics. This study …
The Correlation Between Quality Mentoring Relationships And African American Males' Overall Engagement And Academic Success, Cedric Gerard Miller
The Correlation Between Quality Mentoring Relationships And African American Males' Overall Engagement And Academic Success, Cedric Gerard Miller
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Mentoring has been the saving grace for many African American males. The positive influence of a caring adult, in many cases, shifted their academic path from danger to success. Programs such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America have provided opportunities for students at-risk to form positive relationships along with a better outlook on life. The purpose of this correlational study is to determine if a relationship exists between quality mentoring relationships and attendance, behavior, and cumulative grade point average of African American males. The research questions guiding this correlational study are: 1) Is there a relationship between quality mentoring …

Understanding High School English Learners’ Chronic Absenteeism, Patricia A. George
Understanding High School English Learners’ Chronic Absenteeism, Patricia A. George
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Chronic absenteeism has significant implications for both the individual student and society at large and has been receiving attention for over a century. Every school day counts. Regular attendance provides students with opportunities to learn and has a strong link to achievement. Conversely, poor attendance has serious implications for high school students. For each subgroup of students there is a similar pattern: the likelihood of chronic absenteeism increases as students progress through high school. Notably, the U.S. Department of Education found English learners experience higher chronic absenteeism than their non-English learner peers when they reach high school. Furthermore, compared to …
A Study Of Marshallese Student Attendance In A Northwest Arkansas Secondary School, Paula Lynn Floyd-Faught
A Study Of Marshallese Student Attendance In A Northwest Arkansas Secondary School, Paula Lynn Floyd-Faught
Theses and Dissertations from 2019
Northwest Arkansas has one of the largest populations of Marshall Islanders outside of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The first know Marshallese immigrant arrived in the 1986, and the first Marshallese student in Northwest Public Schools arrived in the late 1980’s. Since that time, an estimated 10,000–12,000 Marshallese have settled in Northwest Arkansas (McElfish, 2016, p. 2). Almost 3,000 Marshallese students attend Northwest Public Schools, with Northwest High School having the largest population in the state. There is a perception that Marshallese students have lower attendance rates than peers, and this study was conducted to determine which factors most …
Do After-School Performing Arts Programs Impact Student Attendance?, Robert G. Hubbird
Do After-School Performing Arts Programs Impact Student Attendance?, Robert G. Hubbird
Dissertations
This three-part dissertation concentrates on student attendance. It is clear that we have a student attendance problem in our nation, particularly in urban school districts. There have been other studies, discussions, and debates on how to improve student attendance, but identifying a single policy, program, incentive, and/or intervention to positively impact absenteeism is difficult. Student absenteeism has and will continue to be a national problem. Many factors play a role in student attendance, to a certain degree, some are controllable and others are extremely difficult to affect.
Part I of this dissertation is a Program Evaluation focusing on the correlation …

Effectiveness Of Alternative School Interventions In Reducing Incidences Of Violence In Schools And Improving Attendance And Graduation Rates, Norman Robinson
Effectiveness Of Alternative School Interventions In Reducing Incidences Of Violence In Schools And Improving Attendance And Graduation Rates, Norman Robinson
Dissertations
The purpose of this meta-analysis was to determine whether alternative school interventions were effective in reducing the incidences of violence in schools and improving attendance and graduation rates, whether positive behavior intervention supports were effective intervention strategies in school violence prevention initiatives, and whether parental and community involvements were necessary for intervention strategies and supports to be effective in school violence prevention initiatives. I was concerned about the negative impact violence had on academics, health, the school environment, and within the community. I expected to identify as many problem types as possible and research similar problems in other areas to …
Behavioral Engagement Shifts Among At-Risk High School Students Enrolled In Online Courses, Jennifer Darling-Aduana
Behavioral Engagement Shifts Among At-Risk High School Students Enrolled In Online Courses, Jennifer Darling-Aduana
Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Academic behaviors such as attendance are highly associated with academic outcomes. High schools are also increasingly turning to online courses to educate their most marginalized students. In this study, I explored the extent to which enrollment in an online course improved engagement and allowed students to make course progress online outside the traditional school day by examining within-student changes in academic behaviors. Students completed their online course in fewer class periods than required to complete a comparable course in a traditional, face-to-face instructional setting. At the same time, students attended, on average, three additional days of school when enrolled in …
Effect Of Service-Learning Participation On High School Attendance And Science Achievement, Julia Roscoe
Effect Of Service-Learning Participation On High School Attendance And Science Achievement, Julia Roscoe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Students at an alternative high school located in a northern Midwest state demonstrated low science achievement and high rates of student absenteeism. Students who do not attend school regularly and achieve in science courses are at risk of not graduating from high school, so teachers at the study school implemented a 16-day service-learning project embedded in a Grade 10 environmental science unit. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of 10th-grade students' participation in the service-learning project on student science achievement and attendance. The theoretical framework was Kearsley and Shneiderman's engagement theory. Archival data from school and …

Feasibility Of Conducting Research In A Student Physiotherapy Clinic In Australia: A Pilot Study, Scott Buckerfield, Felicity Braithwaite, Julie Walters, Maureen P. Mcevoy
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Allied health student clinics are growing in number and scope, providing a potential untapped avenue for clinical research. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of conducting a longitudinal research study over four sessions in a student physiotherapy clinic under the supervision of registered physiotherapists as clinical educators.
Method: This feasibility study gathered data on recruitment in a designated time period, attendance rates and adherence of participants to the treatment, with evaluation also of the acceptability of the entire protocol to participants (patients, students, clinical educators) and to the research team.
Results: Data were collected …
