The Impact Of Self-Regulated Learning Tutoring And Mentoring Program On Black Males In Eighth-Grade Science, Julie Liddle Lott
The Impact Of Self-Regulated Learning Tutoring And Mentoring Program On Black Males In Eighth-Grade Science, Julie Liddle Lott
Theses and Dissertations
The problem of practice described in this paper was identified by the state testing gaps between White and Black male students at a middle school in central South Carolina. This identified problem of practice led to the development of the research question: What is the impact of a tutoring and mentoring program using self-regulated learning strategies on my Black male students and their academic achievement in eighth grade science? The purpose of this study is to determine if a tutoring and mentoring program will affect the academic achievement of my Black male students in science.
The action research model being …
A Geographic Account Of Economic, Health, And Educational Disparities In Hartford’S Sheff Region, Casey D. Cobb
A Geographic Account Of Economic, Health, And Educational Disparities In Hartford’S Sheff Region, Casey D. Cobb
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
In the current study, I use geographic techniques to examine the distribution of key housing, economic, health, and educational indicators in metropolitan Hartford. I focus in particular on factors that bear upon the lives of children in this area, also known as the Sheff region—a reference to the long-standing Sheff v. O’Neill school desegregation lawsuit. The results reveal substantial disparities in the geographic distribution of important resources and outcomes across the racially and economically stratified region. Despite earnest school desegregation efforts, the opportunities, access, and resources available to children in municipalities across the metro Hartford region remain starkly different. Children …
English Language Learners In K-12 Classrooms: Problems, Recommendations And Possibilities, Trisha Henderson
English Language Learners In K-12 Classrooms: Problems, Recommendations And Possibilities, Trisha Henderson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Since California is the state with the highest number of English Language Learner (ELL) students in the nation (Abedi and Levine, 2013; Estrada, 2014), there is clearly a need for what Abedi and Levine (2013) call "accommodation" in educating ELLs in K-12 classrooms. This paper is an attempt to synthesize the current scholarship surrounding K-12 educational practices of ELLs nationally, but with special emphasis on key states: California and Arizona. It begins by describing the achievement gap between the growing number of ELLs and their native English speaking peers (NSP). The paper will first discuss possible reasons for this achievement …
An Econometric Analysis Of Student Achievement In Minnesota, Aexander Garver
An Econometric Analysis Of Student Achievement In Minnesota, Aexander Garver
Augsburg Honors Review
America's public schools are the foundation of the future of American society. Everyone wants America to have good schools so that students are well-educated. So it follows that educational policy must be formulated to meet this goal. However, currently there are many disparities between schools that keep students from being educated equally. One of the causes of these disparities is inequity in school resources between individual schools. One study agrees, saying that disparities in spending have consequences in the subject areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and citizenship. In Minnesota, disparities in educational resources have led to a large achievernent …
Organizational Culture In Community Colleges: Making Connections To Diverse Student Success, Darcy A. Orellana
Organizational Culture In Community Colleges: Making Connections To Diverse Student Success, Darcy A. Orellana
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
The lack of equitable educational outcomes for students of color continues to be a glaring problem for community colleges. Community colleges are challenged to find solutions to address long-standing achievement gaps. One institutional response has been to implement high impact practices (HIPs) as a means to improve persistence, retention, and graduation rates for all students. HIPs, however, have produced mixed results in terms of enhancing student success, and evidence suggests that students of color participate in fewer HIPs and thus receive less benefit from them. This study considers the proposition that students of color may decide not to participate in …

The The Relationships Between The Leadership Styles Of Principals Assigned To Title I Middle Schools, Staff Longevity, School Climate, And Overall School Achievement, Anna L. Rodriguez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The achievement gap stands as one of the top priorities framing educational policy through the past half-century. The middle school level amplifies this gap especially in urban areas. The role of principal leadership in closing the achievement gap is key.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between the leadership styles of principals assigned to Title I middle schools, staff longevity, school climate, and overall school achievement. The researcher applied a non-experimental, ex-post facto research design to investigate the research hypotheses. Utilizing the Google Survey Platform, 290 staff members across 30 middle schools within a large urban …
Stratification, Tracking And Course-Taking Patterns: An Examination Of The Impact Of Mathematics Course Placement On Achievement In A Regional High School District, Charles B. Sampson
Stratification, Tracking And Course-Taking Patterns: An Examination Of The Impact Of Mathematics Course Placement On Achievement In A Regional High School District, Charles B. Sampson
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This study examined the impact of mathematics track placement on the academic achievement of students as measured by student performance on the 2014 New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) in mathematics, and math course attainment in high school as measured by the level of math class completed by the end of grade 12. A substantive empirical base (Goodlad & Oakes, 1998; Slavin, 1995; Oakes, 2005; Darling-Hammond, 2010; Gamoran 2009) exists that outlines the inequalities often associated within tracked school systems. Despite widespread criticism, tracking remains dominant as a strategy to group students in American high schools (Loveless 2013). Regional …

The Impact Of One-To-One Technology Initiatives On The Racial Achievement Gap In The High School Setting., Jaysen Walter Anderson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to analyze the racial achievement gap between high schools that had a one-to-one technology program and schools without this program. Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment reading and math data were collected on 20 Minnesota high schools, 10 with a one-to-one program and 10 without for the 2016-2018 school years. Along with math and reading proficiency data for the 20 schools, achievement gaps were calculated for each school and averaged for each group of schools for the three years studied. Data was collected from a publicly available resource, the Minnesota Department of Education Report Card website. The …
Addressing The Educational Challenges Of Latino Students, Molly A. Ireland
Addressing The Educational Challenges Of Latino Students, Molly A. Ireland
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the largest minority student populations in the United States is Latinos. Despite the large population, there is a significant achievement gap between Latino students and their white classmates. This literature review examines the issues Latino students face at school and how educators can help bridge the gap and increase achievement. Research shows that there are several factors that contribute to this educational gap including student discrimination, lack of parental involvement, an underrepresentation of Latino students in advanced classes and language issues for bilingual students. Many of these issues can be resolved or decreased by educators of Latino students. …
The Stakeholder Gap Lens: Teacher And Parental Perceptions Of The Achievement Gap In Kentucky's Public Schools, Heather Renee Brown Chapman
The Stakeholder Gap Lens: Teacher And Parental Perceptions Of The Achievement Gap In Kentucky's Public Schools, Heather Renee Brown Chapman
Theses and Dissertations--Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education
The research around the achievement gap is extensive. However, regardless that the term “achievement gap” is so widely used in academia today, there is often confusion surrounding what the achievement gap is. This study seeks to answer three research questions: (1) To what extent does an achievement gap exist among different subgroups of students in Kentucky’s K-12 public schools? (2) How do the perceptions of parents and teachers interact with decision-making? (3) How do the ideas of parents and teachers regarding closing the achievement gap compare?
This research examines perceptions of the existence of an achievement gap in Kentucky’s public …
