Becoming His Own Boss, Reginald A. Blake Jr. Dec 2019

Becoming His Own Boss, Reginald A. Blake Jr.

Capstones

Sports and Academics have long been linked. If an athlete's grades aren’t up to par they can’t play, but when an athlete practices in the morning and at night, travels for games, how much learning can they actually do? There are cases however when an athlete uses sports as their ticket for higher education because their grades wouldn’t cut it. 16-year-old Deon McLaughlin is one of those students. For all his success on the court he’s battled with maintaining his school’s rigid academic standards. As good as he is, he knows the NBA isn’t a possibility, for him basketball is …

Balancing The Demands Of College And Athletics: First-Generation Female Student Athletes’ Perception Of The College Experience, Adrienne Rodriguez

Theses & Dissertations

Research Focus. The launch of the 1972 Title IX regulation education amendment arrived at a pivotal time for women in sports. “Title IX recognized the uniqueness of intercollegiate athletics by permitting colleges and universities to have separate and equal athletic programs for women” (Hogshead-Makar, & Zimbalist, 2007, p. 2). As more women began to participate in sports, pressures to perform both competitively and academically presented different challenges for female athletes during their collegiate career. For a female student-athletes to be successful in both academics and athletics, the student-athlete must discover a means to sustain a reasonable balance academically and athletically …

Teaching Addition To Students With Moderate Disabilities Using Video Prompting, Scott A. Dueker, Helen I. Cannella-Malone Sep 2019

Teaching Addition To Students With Moderate Disabilities Using Video Prompting, Scott A. Dueker, Helen I. Cannella-Malone

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

Academic performance for students with moderate to severe disabilities falls far behind their typically developing peers and puts them at risk for continued dependence after school ends. Video prompting is an evidence-based practice that has been used to teach various non-academic skills; however, few studies have focused on using video prompting to teach academic skills other than reading. This study used a delayed multiple baseline across students design to evaluate the use of video prompting to teach single- and double-digit addition to three students with moderate disabilities. Results indicated that all three students improved their accurate completion of addition problems …

Teacher Perceptions Of Parental Incarceration And Its Influence On Children's Academic Success, Amber L. Hooper May 2019

Teacher Perceptions Of Parental Incarceration And Its Influence On Children's Academic Success, Amber L. Hooper

MSU Graduate Theses

A child’s educational fulfillment is often supported by the stability of parents being present in a child’s life. Children’s academic learning can be reinforced by parents taking an active role in promoting their child’s education. When a parent is incarcerated, the child can be left without a support person for their academic success. This may lead to behavior problems in school and the increased chance at academic failure and grade retention. The separation of a parent in a child’s early education years may have effects that last into adulthood and set the stage for intergenerational incarceration. This study examined teachers’ …

Effects Of Latino Parental Involvement In Their Children’S Academics, Sonia Gutierrez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Parental involvement is a large factor in a child’s life. It has been around for many years and has been interconnected with students’ academic achievement regardless of race and socioeconomic status. Research indicates that Latino parents are less involved in their children’s academics due to their personal definition of parental involvement. However, Latino parents really want to get involved in their children’s education, but there are barriers that limit the type of parental involvement they exhibit. Teachers and administrators value parental involvement and try to encourage all parents to participate but at times do not understand the struggles some Latino …
