English Learner Course Scheduling: Practice, Implications, And Aspirations, Aziza Simmons

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

Educating English learners (ELs) is a complex, multifaceted job that takes into account numerous constructs, some tangible and others not. For this endeavor to work optimally, all parties need to work closely and rely on each other with the end result in mind: offering a quality and equitable education to ELs that addresses their academic and language needs and propels them to reach their full potential (Baecher, 2014; Dirocco, 1998). One influential factor is course scheduling for content and career areas (Minaya-Rowe, 2015). Using qualitative case study methodology, this dissertation investigates the current process for scheduling ELs through in-depth semi-structured …

Learning Chemistry In English: Challenges Faced By Non-Native English Speakers, Arwa A. Alshehri

MSU Graduate Theses

Every year many international students come to study in the United States. In addition to all the challenges associated with coming to a new country, non-native English speakers (NNES) face the additional challenge of having to learn their content in English. Therefore, in this project, I recruited NNES participants from general chemistry courses since preliminary inquiries indicated that they have the largest enrollments. Because there were relatively few students at MSU who are non-native English speakers studying chemistry, I used a case study design to be able to extract generalizations from an in-depth study of a few individuals. The aim …

The Impact Of Rigorous Curriculum In Transitional Kindergarten And Kindergarten Classrooms, Lauren Clough

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Educators across the world are being asked to teach academic skills to increasingly younger students. The purpose of this research project was to examine the impact that using rigorous curriculum had on transitional kindergarten and kindergarten educators as well as how rigorous curriculum affected the self-esteem of students. A particular shortcoming in the available literature is the lack of research discussing rigorous curriculum used in early elementary classrooms that contain mostly English language learners and how that affects the teachers and students. This project used a mixed methods approach in order to collect qualitative data from detailed interviews using open-ended …

Literacy Support Through Visual Art For English Language Learners, Claire E. Kiewel

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are many academic, emotional, and social benefits that Visual arts curriculum has on K-12 students. Among those students, English Language Learners (ELL) have very specific language needs that may prevent them from being able to stay in art class as a result of needing time to receive additional language and literacy support. Research shows the number one hurdle for ELL students to overcome is disengagement. The National Arts Education Association (NAEA) reports that visual arts education can be more beneficial to disengaged students because the arts have the ability to engage students who would otherwise be alienated. ELL students …

Rate Of Growth In Spanish-Speaking English Language Learners Receiving Intervention Through Multitiered Systems Of Support, Diana Gilbert Jan 2018

Rate Of Growth In Spanish-Speaking English Language Learners Receiving Intervention Through Multitiered Systems Of Support, Diana Gilbert

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Spanish-speaking English language learners (ELLs) encounter challenges in successfully navigating through the United States educational system. With state and federal laws adding to ELLs’ already lower educational outcomes than that of their English-only peers through a reduction of primary language supports and requirement of high stakes testing, consideration is warranted into the evidence-based interventions aimed to support and promote ELLs’ academic success. Within a tiered Response to Intervention (RTI) model, ELLs’ progress can be examined to determine when they demonstrate the need for additional targeted intervention or even referral for special education assessment. Understanding this progress begins by analyzing ELLs’ …
