Teacher Practices To Help Alternative Education Students, Angela Daws
Teacher Practices To Help Alternative Education Students, Angela Daws
Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations
The problem addressed by this study is that alternative schools have a high recidivism rate, due in part to a difficult transition for students back to their traditional, zoned school. The purpose of this study was to identify practices of experienced alternative school teachers perceived as helping students transition from the alternative school setting to the traditional school setting, as well as challenges teachers face. To identify these practices (and challenges), data were collected from 5 teachers at a disciplinary alternative school by surveys, interviews, and observations. Three research questions guided this study:

The Impact Of Alternative Education: A Summative Evaluation Of The Achieve Program, Cathleen Bendicsen
The Impact Of Alternative Education: A Summative Evaluation Of The Achieve Program, Cathleen Bendicsen
Scholar Week 2016 - present
The consequences of dropping out of high school greatly impact both the individual student and society as a whole. Alternative education programs are designed to meet the needs of students who have struggled in the traditional setting and help prevent them from dropping out. This study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of one alternative program housed within a large Midwestern suburban comprehensive high school and to contribute to the limited research on alternative education program effectiveness using student outcome data. The researcher conducted a quantitative quasi-experimental study to compare the differences in student outcome data (GPA, attendance, office discipline referrals, …

A second purpose was to explore the types of support provided by alternative schools and the perceived importance of the support to avoid recidivism according to adult students 18 years of age and older exiting from alternative education.

Thoughts From The Margins: A Five-Year Longitudinal Exploration With Former Alternative Education Youth, Alice M. Harnischfeger
Thoughts From The Margins: A Five-Year Longitudinal Exploration With Former Alternative Education Youth, Alice M. Harnischfeger
The Qualitative Report
This longitudinal case study explores the evolving identity constructions and schooling perspectives of former alternative education program members, at an early stage of their adult lives. Using a critical sociocultural lens and in-depth semi-structured interviews, I revisited three young women, five years after their participation in research I had previously undertaken in a middle school, alternative program. This current effort provides individual participant profiles detailing the present life circumstances and thinking of each participant, along with brief middle school recaps and five-year interval updates. This work illustrates its participants’ evolving perspectives on selves and schooling and their present recognition of …
