Flexibility with the virtual office and meetings provided a platform for the team to think outside the box. Team members achieved a unity of ideas as they used innovation and creativity …

How Teacher Questions Affect The Development Of A Potential Hybrid Space In A Classroom With Latina/O Students, Casandra Helen Job Dec 2018

How Teacher Questions Affect The Development Of A Potential Hybrid Space In A Classroom With Latina/O Students, Casandra Helen Job

Theses and Dissertations

Questions have been shown to aid in student understanding of mathematics, particularly "novel" questions (Mesa, Celis, & Lande, 2013) that do not have a predetermined answer. However, students do not always understand what is intended by questions posed by teachers, particularly those students who come from different cultural and lingual backgrounds than those dominant in the classroom discourse. This project investigated the relationship between how a mathematics teacher acknowledged students funds of knowledge in her questions and how Latina/o students responded. It shows some research based questioning techniques that allow Latina/o students greater opportunity to participate in the mathematical problem-solving …

Combining Faithfulness With Learning: Avoiding The Path Of Secularization At Brigham Young University, J. Gordon Daines Iii Dec 2018

Combining Faithfulness With Learning: Avoiding The Path Of Secularization At Brigham Young University, J. Gordon Daines Iii

Theses and Dissertations

Most research universities in the United States began as religiously affiliated institutions. Beginning in the late 19th century and continuing over the course of the 20th century, the vast majority of these institutions engaged in a process of secularization through which faith moved from the center of academic life to the periphery. This paper elucidates a conceptual framework for understanding how and why Brigham Young University did not follow the path of secularization that so many research universities, originally religious in nature, pursued. It examines the steps that the university and its sponsoring institution (The Church of Jesus Christ of …

Promoting Second Language Learning Through Oral Asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication, Eric H. Young Dec 2018

Promoting Second Language Learning Through Oral Asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication, Eric H. Young

Theses and Dissertations

Learning to speak a foreign language (L2) can be a challenging feat, made all the more challenging when done in only 50 minute, daily increments in class. Oral asynchronous computer-mediated communication (ACMC) provides learners with opportunities to practice spoken communication and evaluate their practice outside the classroom. In this dissertation, I explore methods for classroom integration of oral ACMC, linguistic traits developed in previous oral ACMC studies, methods for determining the effectiveness of oral ACMC, learner beliefs about the effectiveness of oral ACMC activities, and the effects of learners' deliberate practice in a series of oral ACMC activities on 3 …

Cultural Connections In The Classroom And Pacific Islander Students<'> Value Of Reading, Lyndsai K. Sylva

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on how cultural connections in classroom influences students value of learning, specifically, their value of reading. Several researchers and theorists have emphasized the importance of balancing cognitive and conative aspects of childrens reading development. However, what is lacking in these studies is a focus on Pacific Islander (PI) children. The purpose of this study was to examine value of reading for diverse students who may be struggling in classrooms designed for White, middle-class students. Findings provide educators and those working with diverse students a chance to consider how connecting cultural backgrounds for all students can help in …

Interaction, Student Satisfaction, And Teacher Time Investment In Online High School Courses, Chad A. Turley Dec 2018

Interaction, Student Satisfaction, And Teacher Time Investment In Online High School Courses, Chad A. Turley

Theses and Dissertations

This case study explores what differences exist between two online course models by investigating the results of a student end-of-course evaluation survey and teacher communication logs in two online high school courses. The two course models were designed with different types and levels of interaction, one with high levels of student content interaction, the second with high levels of student-content and student-teacher interaction. The majority of research on interaction in online learning has been conducted with adult learners at the university level. There is far less literature focusing on K-12 online learning while investigating interaction, student satisfaction, and teacher time …

Propensity To Trust And The Impact On The Academic Success Of Student-Athletes: Implications For Athletic Officials In Higher Education, Trevor Thomas Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Student-athletes enter higher education in the United States with diverse backgrounds and academic preparation. In some cases, student-athletes are underprepared for the academic rigor, social structure, and ethical expectations of these institutions. Athletic coaches are charged with the recruitment of highly skilled, competitive, and prepared student-athletes, while other athletic officials are responsible to provide the proper academic support, care, and overall well-being of student-athletes. If coaches, athletic administrators, advisors, and learning specialists could identify educational and demographic patterns related to student-athletes' propensity to trust, they would be better equipped to gain these students' trust and help them navigate the stress …

The Influence Of Task Type On Speech Production By Second Language Learners Of German: An Electropalatographic Study, Elizabeth Cope

Theses and Dissertations

Electropalatography (EPG) is a computer-based system that tracks and measures contact patterns between the tongue and palate during speech production. The present study is focused on how the lingua-palatal contact patterns of native English speakers learning German as a second language (L2) differ as a function of task type. The fricatives ich-Laut [ç] and ach-Laut [x] were used as the target sounds, placed in nonsense words, short sentences, and spontaneous speech. The productions of the fricatives in the varying speech tasks were gathered from 12 university students enrolled in their second semester of a university level course of German. Comparisons …

Paraprofessional Counselors' Perceptions Of Storybooks To Facilitate Children's Communication Following Parental Suicide, Lindsay Jacalyn Regehr

Theses and Dissertations

A parent's death it is one of the most stressful and traumatic events in a child's life (Guldin et al., 2015; Worden, 1996, 2008). In particular, when bereavement is linked to a parent's suicide, children face unique challenges and are more vulnerable to potentially negative outcomes (Brent, Melhem, Donohoe, & Walker, 2009; Haine, Ayers, Sandler, & Wolchik, 2008; Pitman, Osborn, King, & Erlangsen, 2014; Young et al., 2012). Although many factors influence children's recovery following a parent's suicide, the surviving parent's emotional stability and emotional availability to support their children are of critical importance. Additionally, negative outcomes are often linked …

The purpose of these documents is to aid physical educators in exposing their students to lessons and activities that will enable them to be successful in physical education classes and physical activity. Unfortunately, many students have been exposed to such activities as dodge ball, having captains picking teams in front of the whole class, and many others. This paper is a review of research dealing with appropriate instructional practices …

Favoritism In The Physical Education Classroom: Selected Reflective Experiences, David C. Barney, Francis Pleban Dr., Amelia Dodd Nov 2018

Favoritism In The Physical Education Classroom: Selected Reflective Experiences, David C. Barney, Francis Pleban Dr., Amelia Dodd

Faculty Publications

Having a teacher show interest or concern may greatly influence, and encourage student learning; as well as fostering life-long positive behaviors, attitudes, and self-esteem. However, it is noted teachers have a tendency to select ‘favorites’ among their students (Cooper & Good, 1983; Tal & Babad, 1990; Aydogen, 2008); with physical education not immune to this practice. Thus, the purpose of this study was to better understand individual’s (i.e., former students in k-12 physical education) perspectives regarding their reflective experiences of teacher favoritism in physical education during their time in school physical education. Participants were 318 college-aged students from a private …

This research identifies specific theoretical contributions to message layer design from fields as diverse as dialogic systems, recommender systems, social network software, intelligent tutoring systems, conversation theory, learning sciences, interface design, user experience design, computer software design, and education. An unexpected finding is that analysis at the message level, about which …

“Light Athletics” Socio-Economic Dissonance In Post-Revolution Ukraine, John Ballif, Daniel Barney Sep 2018

“Light Athletics” Socio-Economic Dissonance In Post-Revolution Ukraine, John Ballif, Daniel Barney

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the wake of Ukraine’s Euromaidan revolution in 2014, Ukraine has struggled to reconcile its deep-rooted sense of tradition with increasingly westernized aims. After deposing authoritarian president, Viktor Yanokovich, the Ukrainian people now experience a cultural identity crisis paralleled only by the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. This is an urgent narrative that has received little attention from Western media and academia. In the summer of 2016, I spent three months documenting, with photographs, the socio-economic implications of Ukraine’s revolution. My findings, both photographs and short essays, were then sorted, edited, and contextualized in the making of …

Nceca Presentation, Lindsey Jensen, Tara Carpenter Sep 2018

Nceca Presentation, Lindsey Jensen, Tara Carpenter

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Tara Carpenter and I traveled to Portland and led a discussion with about 50 people at the National Ceramic Education Association. We researched the trend of unskilled ceramic artwork that has been happening in the art world lately. Conceptual work that is done by someone who has no real knowledge of ceramics is more prevalent in galleries than skilled ceramic art. Ceramics is in a weird place between art and craft and often times schools get caught in the middle. We e-mailed and interviewed 30 teachers on their opinions of this topic as well as how they incorporate conceptual art …

Self-Study Of A Teacher's Practices Of And Experience With Emotion Regulation, Lauren Elyse Paravato

Theses and Dissertations

In the past decade, educational researchers have engaged in research on teacher emotion regulation. However, there has never been an in-depth look at teacher emotion regulation studied from the first person perspective of the teacher. This study seeks to offer just such a perspective. The self-study explored how, across time, I as the teacher participant, teaching in a mid-socioeconomic suburb of Utah, responded emotionally in terms of classroom interactions. Over a 4-month period, I made daily "in the moment" recordings of emotional classrooms situations and at the end of each week, the collection of recordings was reviewed and coded, creating …

Faculty Members' Lived Experiences With Open Educational Resources, M. Troy Martin Aug 2018

Faculty Members' Lived Experiences With Open Educational Resources, M. Troy Martin

Theses and Dissertations

The cost of textbooks has continued to increase, and the financial effect on students in higher education is significant. Numerous studies have been done to learn more about student and faculty perceptions toward Open Educational Resources (OER) use. Recent studies confirm that most instructors would use OER in order to alleviate the financial burden placed on students; however, OER adoption rates do not reflect this belief. In my study I sought to better understand what instructors experience when they search for OER. In this phenomenological study, I interviewed faculty who expressed a desire to use OER and to capture their …

Perceptions Of School Uniforms In Relation To Socioeconomic Statuses, Aaron B. Jones Aug 2018

Perceptions Of School Uniforms In Relation To Socioeconomic Statuses, Aaron B. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Schools that implement a school uniform policy are on the rise (Musu-Gillette, Zhang, Wang, Zhang & Oudekerk, 2017). About 74% of these schools have a high population of low socioeconomic status students (Musu-Gillette et al., 2017) with about 75% or more qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The purpose of this study was to examine any relationships between students' perceptions of the effects of school uniforms and student socioeconomic status. In a charter school, a survey was completed by students to gather perception information and a separate survey by parents to gather socioeconomic status information. Hypotheses were tested using descriptive …

Promoting Pleasure In Reading Through Sustained Silent Reading: A Self-Study Of Teacher Practices, Kimberly Turley Mckell Aug 2018

Promoting Pleasure In Reading Through Sustained Silent Reading: A Self-Study Of Teacher Practices, Kimberly Turley Mckell

Theses and Dissertations

According to a survey, the majority of fourth grade students in 2005 did not choose reading as a preferred activity for entertainment (Guthrie, McRae, & Klauda, 2007). Adolescents are increasingly resistant to reading and seldom list it as a pleasurable activity. Interestingly, research shows that students who enjoy reading more do better academically (Gambrell, 2011). Accordingly, as a teacher I seek to increase students' reading for pleasure. To give space in my curriculum for students to do this and for me to support them, I used Sustained Silent Reading (SSR), a practice where students are given time to read a …

Unfinished Business: The Missing Skills, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii Jul 2018

Unfinished Business: The Missing Skills, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii

Faculty Publications

Two taxonomies of instructional goals (Bloom, Gagné) are revisited, asking why the design community at large treats them as “received wisdom”, while their authors and colleagues treat(ed) them as unfinished business and continued to modify them. The question is raised as to the possibility of finding a resolution of their differences. The thesis is advanced that both consist of lower-level performances subordinate to and leading to skilled performance, which may supply a unifying principle. The proposition is advanced that we should look for ways of reconciling and integrating their differences. Using skilled performance as the superclass of both is suggested …

Principles Of Productivity Revealed From Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Discussions Around The Productiveness Of Teacher Moves In Response To Teachable Moments, Kylie Victoria Palsky Jul 2018

Principles Of Productivity Revealed From Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Discussions Around The Productiveness Of Teacher Moves In Response To Teachable Moments, Kylie Victoria Palsky

Theses and Dissertations

How do teachers talk about the productiveness of teacher's in-the-moment responses to student mathematical thinking? This is a question current research does not fully answer as most research on teacher moves is focused on what teacher moves researchers have noticed teachers do rather than on what teachers think about these teacher moves. To fill the gap in the research and to answer the question, a group of 13 teachers were given ten classroom situations to compare and contrast for productivity. I analyzed (a) the content of the teachers' discussions by drawing on Teacher Response Coding (TRC) language, and (b) the …
