Ownership And Violence Against Women Of Color Reflected Through The Lens Of Anglo Saxon Theology, Jennifer Herring, Luraine Kimmerle
Violence Against Women conference
In the American cultural mind, white bodies have been upheld as ideal. In addition, the male body has received praise, greater access, and safety on the streets, in business, education, and the wider world. In the arena of higher education students tend to discover how their personal sociocultural perspective informs ownership of the lack thereof. It is through this reality that the idea of ownership is seen when it comes to violence inflicted on/received by women. When race is included in the violence against women dialogue we uncover the branches of Anglo-Saxon Exceptionalism, planted by the theologies and worldviews of …

I will then share a literature review on the research to better support families when creating an inclusive …

The nature of the chair position is likely to result in stress, burn out, and other unhealthy situations. This workshop presents strategies and proven practices for taking control of the available time and getting the job done while managing stress and giving priority to leading a healthy and enriching personal …

Digital Initiatives Symposium
The continued increase of digital tools and methods in both teaching and research has created a need for initial and ongoing support within institutions. While each institution has its own specific needs, we can learn a great deal from each other’s approaches and experiences. This presentation offers as a case study Harvard University’s recent (and ongoing) experience working across groups and divisional boundaries to support digital scholarship, digital methods-related courses, and the integration of digital components into courses and assignments through training, consultation, and the development and implementation of digital tools and methods.

Customized Financial Interventions That May Affect Retention Rates In Nursing Programs, Joseph Rojek Ii
Scholar Week 2016 - present
With the cost of post-secondary education on the rise and retention rates of university students a major concern for university administrators, the author of the current study desired to explore the effect that a Financial Solutions Team (FST) had on improving the retention and graduation rates of undergraduate (RN-BSN) and graduate level (MSN) nursing students (n = 1030). The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the enhanced FST processes in order to determine its impact on the one-year retention rates after a financial hold was placed on a nurse’s student account, and the graduation rates …

With the proliferation of social media, interpersonal violence and women in the workforce, a determination of a relationship between EI and those variables was warranted. The study was conducted at a small private Christian university. An online survey was administered to 123 sophomores. This study was a cross-sectional quantitative design, that utilized three established instruments to …

Ethics And The Policing Of African Americans And Those Of African Descent In America, Richard Brown Iii, Abhijeet R. Shirsat
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies
The criminal justice system has a race problem. Data shows that racial disparities exist within corrections. The numbers of minorities that are entangled within the courts, the number of arrests made by police and the numbers of unarmed blacks who have recently been killed by the police, support the notion that who have been given a pass by county prosecutors and states attorneys. Effective targeting of African-Americans and those of color (hot spots policing) by the police officers is an important component which needs further examination. To fulfill this gap in the literature, this study will analyze the perspective of …

Nobody’S At The Golden Door: The Effect Of Xenophobia On Us University Enrollment, Abhijeet R. Shirsat, Richard Brown Iii
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies
A rise in xenophobic political rhetoric, presidential policy and far-right populism have led to a dramatic decrease in international student enrollment in US colleges and universities. For the first time since 9/11, American institutions of higher learning are facing the effect of widespread fear among prospective students from around the globe. After the election of President Donald J. Trump in 2016, universities reported the number of international students enrolling in their schools fell by seven percent and continues to decline. Seeking to allay the fear and uncertainty in their international student communities, colleges and universities are resisting proposed immigration policies …

Global Perspectives In The Us Social Justice Classes: Impact On Identity, Alexandra (Sasha) Watkins, Corliss Brown Thompson
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
This paper is based on the experiences and reflections of the instructor and the student in the social justice doctoral-level course. Graduate-level social justice classes provide students with valuable knowledge on how power, privilege, and oppression operate in the society and its impact on individuals and communities (Boutain, 2008; Garii & Appova, 2013; Mohammed, Cooke, Ezeonwu, & Stevens, 2014; Motulsky, Gere, Saleem, & Trantham, 2014). At the same time, the scholarly material covered in the social justice classes can serve as a powerful catalyst for examining one’s personal identity (Farnsworth, 2010), thus contributing to students’ identity development (Izadinia, 2013; Trent, …

Interest Among Master's Degree Students And Graduates In Earning A Doctoral Degree In Leadership, Richard Houseal
Scholar Week 2016 - present
The number of professional doctorates offered by universities has grown rapidly since the 1990s. Research has shown that professional doctorates offer relevant doctoral education in order to meet the needs of the modern workplace. It is therefore incumbent upon universities to understand both the needs of the marketplace and the needs of students in order to offer doctoral programs that meet the needs of both. Universities must also determine the best use of limited resources for recruiting students to their doctoral programs. To address these issues, this study examined the level of interest that potential doctoral students—those currently in graduate …

Breaking Through The Sexed Glass Ceiling: Women In Academic Leadership Positions, Sheila Smith Mckoy, Dawn Michelle Banauch, Keisha Love, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
In 2009, Patterson, Kirschke, Seaton and Hossfeld revisited the ongoing conversation about gender inequity and inequality in higher education. Their work entitled Challenges for Women Department Chairs (New Prairie Press, 2009) focused on the numerous gaps – salary, promotion, discrimination, harassment -- that define women’s experiences in academic leadership. The emerging trends in academia still suggest that the work that they started in 2009 continues to be a vital concern for women in academic leadership positions. Very little research exists in relation to the intersectional conversations that need to occur when these gendered gaps are coupled with other aspects of …

Succeeding With Problem Faculty: A 6-Step Guide, Kent Crookston
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
Dr. Crookston’s research in academic leadership includes a national survey in which 3,000 department chairs and deans identified “dealing with problem faculty” as their stand-alone top concern. Problem colleagues in any organization include bullies, jerks, passive-aggressives, poor performers and those who are emotionally distressed. Drawing from best-selling business and leadership literature, Dr. Crookston identifies six steps for effectively dealing with a challenging colleague. Participants leave this workshop with sound practical guidance on how to act when things go wrong, but more importantly how to ensure that things go right.
