The Impact Of Parental Involvement On Student Success: School And Family Partnership From The Perspective Of Parents And Teachers, Audric Newchurch

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

The purposes of this study was to examine the perceptions of parents and teachers regarding their awareness and responsiveness concerning parental involvement and search for ways to improve the home-school relationship through effective parental involvement. Additionally, the study strived to identify efficient yet useful ways that families and schools can build strong partnerships and to discover the role of the school in at home parenting and learning through a collaborative partnership based on Epstein’s six typologies of parental involvement.

Conversely, this study focused on two uncommon involvement typologies in Epstein’s framework. Those two are parenting and learning at home. …

Parental Involvement In The Homework World, Drew Nonnemacher Oct 2017

Parental Involvement In The Homework World, Drew Nonnemacher

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review explores the trends of homework in current education as well as the effects that parents may have on homework, specifically with upper-level elementary students. Homework is a highly debated topic in the scope of education. The subject matter these days is vastly different from what it was even twenty years ago. That, in turn, could potentially lead towards unnecessary stress at home for parents trying to help their children with their homework. Families and their children tend to be busier than ever in our current society. With so many extra-curricular opportunities and schedules that are borderline out …

Teacher Perceptions Of Parental Involvement With Parents Who Are Deployed: A Case Study, Valerie Gonzalez Jul 2017

Teacher Perceptions Of Parental Involvement With Parents Who Are Deployed: A Case Study, Valerie Gonzalez

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to understand how elementary school teachers of military-connected students perceive parental involvement when at least one of the parents is deployed. Currently, minimal literature exists on this phenomenon. The Department of Defense (2014) explained that there are over 3.4 million people serving as military personnel, and of the 1.2 million military-connected children, 80% attend public schools in the United States (American Association of School Administrators, 2016). Thus, a need for research on this population of students exists. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) ecological systems theory and Epstein’s (2011) ideas on parental involvement, a qualitative …

Obstacles And Strategies: A Multicase Study Of Three Mexican Mothers' Involvement In Education, Araceli Calderon May 2017

Obstacles And Strategies: A Multicase Study Of Three Mexican Mothers' Involvement In Education, Araceli Calderon

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

Research shows the positive impact of family involvement on children’s education (Abrego, Rubin, & Sutterby, 2006; Epstein & Dauber, 1991; Jasis & Ordonez-Jasis, 2004; Quezada, Díaz, & Sanchez, 2003; Osterling, Violand-Sanchez, &Vacano, 1999; Zentella, 2005). When families get involved in school activities, working at home with their children and having good parent-school communication, they promote better education for their children (Abrego, Rubin, & Sutterby, 2004; Quezada, Díaz, & Sanchez, 2003). But for Latino families, it not always is easy to be involved in school activities, especially if they are not well informed of the school’s expectations. Integration may not be …

Encountering The American School System Through The Eyes Of First- And Second- Generation Vietnamese Immigrant Parents, Khanh P. Le Apr 2017

Encountering The American School System Through The Eyes Of First- And Second- Generation Vietnamese Immigrant Parents, Khanh P. Le

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

As the immigrant population increases in the United States, it is important for American administrators and teachers to form effective partnerships with immigrant parents. With these partnerships, schools can encourage greater direct parental involvement from immigrant parents. Active parental involvement positively correlates with academic success; however, active parental involvement is not seen as much in Asian parents compared to other ethnic groups. Current literature shows lack of direct parental involvement in Asian parents due to barriers such as cultural differences, language, education level of parents, absence of knowledge about American schools, and school-based barriers; however, little is known about Vietnamese …

Working Together: Examining The Effects Of Parental And Community Involvement In Schools On School Delinquency, Erica Nicole Bower

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

How do we confront the problem of school delinquency? This study examined the impact of parental and community involvement in schools on school delinquency by employing a cross-sectional secondary data analysis of the 2008 School Survey on Crime and Safety. Bivariate and multivariate analyses demonstrated that parental involvement in schools is significantly associated with and predictive of decreased school delinquency, while community involvement in schools is significantly associated with and predictive of increased school delinquency. Findings suggest that based on school administrator perceptions, stimulating parent involvement in schools and cultivating certain types of community involvement in schools may reduce delinquency …

Examining Parental Involvement In Impoverished Schools, Tara Lynn Broadus Jan 2017

Examining Parental Involvement In Impoverished Schools, Tara Lynn Broadus

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A decline in parent participation in one impoverished Pre-K through Grade 5 school in Texas over recent years has been an ongoing concern for school administrators. The purpose of this instrumental case study was to investigate parent perceptions of the school's efforts to involve parents in the school. Research questions focused on identifying factors that inhibited parental involvement concentrating on parent perceptions of school efforts. Constructivist theory and the advocacy/liberatory framework formed the conceptual framework for this study. A triangulation method for data collection included parent interviews, teacher questionnaires, and observations of parental involvement activities over 12 weeks. Participants were …

Improving Parental Involvement In An Inner-City Elementary School, Veronica D. Marion Jan 2017

Improving Parental Involvement In An Inner-City Elementary School, Veronica D. Marion

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A pattern of low parental involvement exists at in an inner-city school in the northeast region of the United States, where 90% of the students are students of color and fewer than 10% of parents attend school-based activities. Low parental involvement at the local school may lead to decreased student achievement and limited access to needed resources and information. A qualitative case study design was used to explore the problem. Epstein's typology, which includes the traditional definition of parental involvement and acknowledges the parents' role in the home, provided the conceptual framework for the study. Research questions focused on perceived …
