“Doing Well In Spite Of The School”: How African American Students Perceive Achievement, Engagement, And School Climate In The Aftermath Of California’S Local Control Funding Formula, Angela Clark Louque, Wil Greer, April Clay, Ayanna Balogun

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore urban African American students’ school experiences based on the aftermath of California’s Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), focusing on achievement, engagement, and school climate. Survey data and focus groups of 62 participants were analyzed using chi-square, multiple regression, and an iterative process. Findings suggest that students desire information regarding honors courses, stronger teacher/student relationships, and fairer discipline treatment. Effective strategies and practices are recommended including the LCFF’s revisions to have specific goals for African American students.

Five reinforcing activities were presented to and interrupted for two participants with autism. An errorless teaching procedure was then introduced with two similar activities prompting the participants to request information saying “How?” in order to resume the activity. The dependent variable included both the cumulative number of times “How?” occurred and number of times he used the acquired information to access his reinforcer. Training was conducted across five clinicians to program for and determine generalization across both activities and people. This case study explored the short-term international co-teaching experience of pre-service general education teachers who were paired up with intern special education teachers (N = 8) to provide English language instruction to students in South Korea. Pre-, during-, and post-data were collected to investigate how the participants experienced their co-teaching. The narratives of two participants were chosen for phenomenological analysis, reflecting an overwhelmingly positive and a rather negative co-teaching experience. Functional Technology For Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: Meta-Analysis Of Mobile Device-Based Interventions, Jemma Kim, Christina H. Kimm

This study employs a meta-analysis of single-subject design research to investigate the efficacy of mobile device-based interventions for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) and to further examine possible variables that may moderate the intervention outcomes. A total of 23 studies, 78 participants, and 140 observed cases that met the inclusion criteria were included in the meta-analysis. The efficacy of interventions was measured by computing the percentage of nonoverlapping data points (PNDs) and compared across participants’ characteristics, mobile device types, functions of mobile device use, target skills, and intervention strategies. Perceived Social Norms And Health Behaviors: Are College Drinking Behaviors Mediated By University Attachment?, John C. Wheeler

The purpose of this study was to assess school attachment in college students and alcohol use. High perceptions of peer alcohol use were expected to be positively correlated with rates of individual student use. Also, as students reported higher rates of attachment to their university, rates of alcohol use would decrease. Furthermore, it was expected that affiliation with a fraternity or sorority would alter the relationship between university attachment and alcohol use. Teacher perceptions of their students have been shown to play a key role in how teachers design and implement curriculum (Scruggs & Mastropieri, 1996) as well as how ‘connected’ a student feels within the classroom (McNeeley, Nonnemaker, & Blum, 2002).
