School of Education Faculty Articles
Researchers in a variety of disciplines pursue creative ways to explore complex areas of inquiry. This literature review examines the use of concept maps as a unique tool for conducting research. This study embraces an inclusive definition of concept mapping. Three main approaches for conducting research using concept maps as a tool emerged: relational, cluster, and word frequency. These approaches are included in the different phases of research process such as data collection, analysis, and presentation. Each approach revealed strengths and limitations that researchers need to take into account. This discussion broadens the lens of the meaning of concept mapping …

Aging Education: A Worldwide Imperative, Sandra L. Mcguire Dr.
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Nursing
Life expectancy is increasing worldwide. Unfortunately, people are generally not prepared for this long life ahead and have ageist attitudes that inhibit maximizing the “longevity dividend” they have been given. Aging education can prepare people for life’s later years and combat ageism. It can reimage aging as a time of continued growth, development, fulfilment. Unfortunately, aging education is not a common occurrence. This education needs to begin with children and continue throughout life. This article discusses why we need to teach about aging, aging education content, suggests a conceptual framework for aging education, and presents aging education resources. The concept …

Issue 12: International Students Adaptation And Integration In The Canadian University Sector, Guanglong Pang, Margaret Walton-Roberts
International Migration Research Centre
International students are increasingly seen as potential migrants in the Canadian context. Pathway language programs are widely recognized as an effective system to enhance international students’ linguistic skills and a means towards effective cultural adaptation before entering university degree programs. University instructors commonly agree that Asian international students experience integration challenges. Given that China continues to dominate as the leading sending country of international students to Canada, this research examined Wilfrid Laurier University’s affiliated language program, which has a large Chinese student population, in order to assess the socio-cultural adaptation process. Considering the variable educational contexts that Chinese international students …

This phenomenological study describes the experiences of primary care physicians trained in the United States who participated in an international clinical immersion rotation during medical school or residency. Five central themes emerge relating to their experience: (a) Participants chose the international rotation for developmental purposes. (b) The lifestyle in their destination country was different than in the U.S., and this had an impact on participants. (c) There were positive outcomes for participants and their future practice. (d) Harmful external forces (at the rotation site) shortened patients’ lifespans and had a negative impact on their quality of life. And, (e) participants …

Multilingual Literacies: Invisible Representation Of Literacy In A Rural Classroom, Lydiah Kananu Kiramba
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
In many countries, educational policies typically mandate school activities that promote a homogeneous and narrow range of academic literacies for all learners despite the diverse nature of human learning. This ethnographic case study examines how a 12-year-old Kenyan fourth-grade student performing below average on all standardized tests used multiple invisible literacies while documenting his knowledge and life experiences in a rural context. Invisible literacies are covert meaning- making literacy practices that are not privileged in the classroom. Examination of these practices shows a convergence between school and home literacies, suggesting a need for education stakeholders to identify literacies that are …

Academic Freedom As A Human Right: The Problem Of Confucius Institutes, Jay Todd Richey
Academic Freedom As A Human Right: The Problem Of Confucius Institutes, Jay Todd Richey
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Academic freedom is the ability to explore, research, and analyze any topic without prohibitions or repercussions. In the Anglo-American tradition, it is both a fundamental aspect of academia and, as this thesis argues, a fundamental human right. Although the United States embraces this core principle of academia within American universities, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) seeks to suppress the acquisition of knowledge through restrictions on topics deemed politically-sensitive to the Chinese government. Although human rights abuses pervade the PRC and academic freedom is suppressed, PRC-funded entities known as Confucius Institutes (CIs) are widely embraced at universities in liberal democracies. …

Trump, Immigration, And Children: Disrupted Schooling, Disrupted Lives, Edmund T. Hamann
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Many of us work with immigrant communities and are witnessing firsthand the fear, frustration, and heartache caused by Trump’s immigration policies. Yet despite our years of work with, and study of, immigrant communities, there are times when our academic expertise is not enough. What follows is a reflection by CAE member Ted Hamann on just such a situation he faced this spring when asked for help in assisting two US-born students that were about to accompany their soon-to-be deported parents to Mexico.

Do You Want Kentucky?” “… No Thank You, I'M Not Hungry.”: A Case Study Of International Student Choice In Higher Education, Wouter Van Alebeek
Dissertations
In order to attract international students, it is important to know why students select a particular institution and how they experience the selection process. Additionally, there seems to be limited agreement among researchers on a conceptual framework for international student college choice and how it might differ from a model used to organize domestic students’ college choice experiences.
The purpose of this qualitative case study is to gain insight into the stages of college choice for international students by testing an expansion of the Hossler and Gallagher (1987) theoretical model that adds the push and pull factors related to the …

Educational Leadership Doctoral Program Western Kentucky University As a result of globalization, the world truly is a smaller place. Today’s business school graduate no longer has to board a plane to transact with international markets—all that is needed is a mobile device and an internet connection. Therefore, a global mindset cannot be limited to only those students who have an opportunity to study abroad; universities must find ways to provide all students with international exposure. A review of the literature shows that, even though business schools are providing students with the necessary technical skills to work within a globalized economy, …

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
Recent research on Muslim populations has offered interesting but limited insights about values preferences. This mixed-methods study examines the prevalence of support for patriarchy among a sample of religious Muslim university students in Southern Thailand using items from the World Values Survey. It also investigates the durability of these preferences by examining correlations between support or opposition to patriarchal values with preferences towards courtship practices, and elements that influence respondents’ views on gender roles, particularly related to the contemporary socioeconomic and political situation facing the Muslim minority of Southern Thailand.
Comparing Education And Policy Outcomes In Brazil, India, And South Africa, Sarah Allen
Comparing Education And Policy Outcomes In Brazil, India, And South Africa, Sarah Allen
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
In my research I ask, "What features of education policies are conducive to successful educational outcomes, and what types of policies should be encouraged in developing countries to compliment their development efforts?" Discussions regarding education policy are highly polarized between supply-side and demand-side views. I engage in a comparative case study between three emerging BRICS countries who are dynamic economic and political players in their respective regions-Brazil, India, and South Africa-to analyze the extent to which each country has used supply-side and demand-side education policies and to what extent these policies have been effective. I conclude that either supply-side policies, …
