In this day and age of crises – financial, enrollment,
even scandal – among institutions of higher education,
image “management” has become a tool to help
some institutions stay afloat. Countless colleges and
universities have resorted to spending money on
glossy brochures, billboards and even on expensive
TV airtime.
The images they portray are usually one of happy
and attractive students having fun on campus, enjoying
athletic events and amenities that used to be more
likely to be found at country clubs than colleges. The
quality of education is almost an afterthought. The
name of the institution is being sold …

An Urban Institute Community Outreach Program: The Changing Faces Of Pharmacy - A Student Enrichment Program, Manouchkathe Cassagnol, Vibhuti Arya, John Conry
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Pharmacists serve as important resources for health and medication-related questions to many communities across various demographics, races and ethnicities throughout the U.S. This is particularly true for a place as diverse as New York City (NYC). The Changing Faces of Pharmacy-Student Enrichment Program has provided mentoring services and education to a growing cohort of high school students through the active participation of our Pharm.D. students. We will look to create strategic alliances that will provide broader services and support to this group of students, including financial and academic aspects. We will also look to develop partnerships to find STEM focused …
If You Think Education Is Expensive, Try Ignorance., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
If You Think Education Is Expensive, Try Ignorance., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

This is the 100th column of this series. During
the two years during which this column has been
published uninterruptedly on a weekly basis, a
common question I received is why do I defend
higher education?
I remember when I decided to become a scientist.
The day was October 5, 1957. I was a 6-year-old kid
living in Venezuela. The big headline in the newspaper
that day was that the Soviets had launched
an artificial satellite named Sputnik. I was amazed.
I asked my father all kinds of questions about it,
but he could not tell me much more than …
Effects Of Management-Development Practices On Hospitality Management Graduates' Job Satisfaction And Intention To Stay, Edwin Torres, Howard Adler
Effects Of Management-Development Practices On Hospitality Management Graduates' Job Satisfaction And Intention To Stay, Edwin Torres, Howard Adler
Edwin Torres
Companies have long recognized the importance of training and developing their managers to prepare them for their short- and long-term careers. Formal management-development programs and other less formal means of management development abound in the hospitality industry. Therefore, one may ask whether the entry-level managers for whom these programs are designed perceive them to be effective. The present study explores management-development practices, procedures, and techniques, and their effects on job satisfaction and organizational commitment
Virtual Reference Best Practices And The College Student Experience, Sara J. Stambaugh
Virtual Reference Best Practices And The College Student Experience, Sara J. Stambaugh
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This capstone addressed the research question: what are today’s best practices in online reference, and how can librarians at academic institutions improve the student experience in online reference transactions? It documents one librarian’s creation of best practices for a virtual reference service based on the guidelines and practices outlined by governing bodies, commercial entities, and other libraries. During the study the practices were implemented at a higher education institution and results about the effectiveness, clarity, and overall improvement of virtual reference transactions were gathered using a mixed-methods approach. The author used related research literature as a foundation for building best …
Viewing Obama’S Legacy In Higher Education., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Viewing Obama’S Legacy In Higher Education., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
For eight years as president, Barack Obama showed
an unusual interest in reforming higher education
when compared with any other U.S. president in history.
Most concerned themselves with primary and
secondary education. The only possible exception is
Abraham Lincoln, under whose administration the
land grant university system was created.
One reason for his interest in higher education may
be because Obama himself once taught at the law school
of the University of Chicago. Another may be that, in
retrospect, Obama has always been a great admirer of
Lincoln, mirroring his stances on many issues.

Higher Ed Sees Decline In Language Studies., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Despite much talk about the importance of globalization,
the very places where most people in
the U.S. learn foreign languages – colleges and universities
– are offering fewer and fewer courses in
them. In a report published last year by the Modern
Languages Association (MLA), statistics show that
for the first time since 1995 we are seeing a drop
in enrollment in courses in all major European languages,
including Spanish. And the drop is significant:
6.7 percent overall since 2009 after increasing
steadily since 1995.
Spanish, the most studied language in colleges
and universities (more than all other languages
combined), …

Policing Postsecondary Education: University Police Legitimacy And Fear Of Crime On Campus, Christina N. Barker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Assessing the perceptions that students have of the university police officers charged with ensuring student safety is important to maintaining the overall safety of the campus. The current study sought to assess the relationship between student perceptions of university police and the fear of crime felt by students while on campus. Data collection was conducted through a survey methodology using a convenient sample of students in which a self-report survey was sent to the university email addresses of all students enrolled in a southeastern university (n=260). Through the employment of a scale developed to assess the perceptions of university police …
The Line Between Free Speech And Hate Speech., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
The Line Between Free Speech And Hate Speech., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
With the rise of incidents of bigotry on U.S. campuses
after the November elections, a question has
come up. How can we differentiate between free
and hate speech and what can we do about the latter?
The answer is complex, but there is a solution
to the problem.
At the federal level – and contrary to popular
belief – free speech is not absolute. The Supreme
Court has ruled many times setting limits on
speech, from child pornography cases, to deceptive
advertisement to specific threats of violence. The
fine line comes when dealing with espousing ideologies,
like the ones held …
Preparing Future Leaders: An Ethnographic Study Exploring The Culture Of Succession Planning And Leader Development In Christian Higher Education, Andrew Barton
Dissertations
The purpose of this ethnographic case study was to explore the culture of succession planning and leader development at Lipscomb University, using the 5C’s: Strategies for succession planning in the academy model. In the face of unprecedented disruption and complexity, the review of literature suggested the higher education sector in the United States is largely underprepared for the upcoming exodus and shortage of leaders. With religiously-affiliated institutions accounting for more than one in five colleges and universities in the US, there were no visible studies attending to succession planning and leader development in Christian higher education. Given the important contribution …
Anti-Intellectualism Casts Shadow Over Higher Ed., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Anti-Intellectualism Casts Shadow Over Higher Ed., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
In addition to all of the issues affecting higher education,
like the lack of appropriate funding, diminishing
enrollments, insularity, and the like, now it is
time to recognize the biggest problem of all – anti-intellectualism.
Anti-intellectualism is defined as a negative attitude
toward intellectual pursuits, whether in the
form of education or scholarly activities and toward
their practitioners, such as college professors and
intellectuals in general.

The Consequences Of The Election For Higher Education., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
“So, now what?” That is the question some people are asking when it comes to higher education after one of the longest and most contentious presidential elections in American history. The question comes up not only because of the results, but also because higher education is facing one of its most grave situations in its history due to, among other things, decreasing funding, exorbitant student debt and bad press.
So what can we expect in the months and years to come based on the platform and statements issued by the leaders of the upcoming administration? Here is a sample.

Persistence To Graduation: Does Financial Aid Matter?, Mary E. Anderson, Noran L. Moffett
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
This mixed methods research study used a QUAN-QUAL Model to examine the impact that various factors have on student persistence to graduation in postsecondary education. A documentary research approach was used to collect existing data for first-time full-time freshmen in the Fall 2008 Cohort who graduated within six years at a private Historically Black College or University. A correlational research design was employed to determine if a significant relationship existed between the dependent variables—Persistence to Graduation within Six Years and Final GPA at Time of Degree Completion and independent variables. Descriptive statistical analyses were used to describe, summarize, and …

Understanding Women's Experiences With Women-Only Leadership Development Programs In Higher Education: A Mixed Methods Approach, Danielle Marie Geary
Dissertations (1934 -)
Previous research indicated that women’s advancement into the leadership and administrative ranks in higher education has stalled over the past twenty years. Studies highlighted the socio-cultural and structural barriers that create challenges for women’s advancement in the academy. This study focused on the use of women-only leadership development programs (WLDPs) as a potential resource for women in the pursuit of advancing their careers. Few research studies to date assess the outcome for women who have attended WLDPs. This study was an in-depth case study of the Women in Higher Education Leadership Summit (WHELS) held at the University of San Diego, …

Drinking Coffee With Undergrads: Non-Traditional Approaches To Outreach, Reference Services, And Engagement In An Academic Library Setting., Alex Boucher, Karlie Johnson, Kayla Johnson, James Gilbreath
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Advertising and promoting key services and resources is crucial to the mission of any academic library. But successfully engaging with the student body of any large university is a challenging and problematic task. What does an academic librarian do? What does an academic library have to offer its students? Do undergraduates (or even graduate students) really know what libraries and librarians have to offer? Librarians at The University of Alabama and The University of North Carolina-Greensboro have attempted to bridge this gap by moving out of the physical confines of the library in order to engage with students on familiar …

Workforce development policy is a major cornerstone for many governments. The success can be linked to educational programs that support the training of the workforce. Sharing of best practices among higher education institutions supporting workforce development can help newer institutions and support regional workforce development goals.

Cutting taxes in order to spur economic development
is an idea still making its way around
the political landscape. It doesn’t seem to matter
how many times “trickle down” economics has
been debunked not only by economists, but also
by history, it seems to linger. Yet, this is part of
an ideology that is considered as gospel by many
politicians.
Of course the idea has one superficial appeal
and one superficial appeal only. It promises to
cut taxes, even if the ones who benefit the most
from such policies are the ones who need them
the least.
How Math Avoidance Influences Degree Completion For Bible College Students: A Case Study Of A Small, Private Institution In Upstate New York, Bonnie Novak
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this instrumental case study was to describe math perception and avoidance for ministerial undergraduate students at a small, private Bible college in upstate New York. In the research, math avoidance was generally defined as the participants’ perception of math, their delay in completing a credit-bearing math course until their senior year or not at all, and their own learning or degree completion as a result. The theories guiding this study were Tinto’s Retention Theory/Model of Institutional Departure, Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, and Estep’s Theory of Christian Formation. The central question was: How does math avoidance influence persistence …

Operation Transition: Post-9/11 Combat Marines Transitioning To Civilian Life And The Role Of Higher Education In Their Identity Formation, Jamie M. Fenton
Education (PhD) Dissertations
Operation Transition is an excavation of the experiences of Post-9/11 combat Marines, who have been Honorably Discharged, as their transition to civilian and student life. The work of Operation Transition was conducted with a group of Marines, called The Unit, and presents the variety of stories that exist among Veterans, beyond the highly publicized and limiting narratives of Hero, Wounded Warrior, or Killer. The fictive piece represents the experiences of transition that illuminate a civilian privileged higher education system and society-at-large. Operation Transition exemplifies and acknowledges that value of stories for understanding and community building. As such, Operation Transition, which …

Extreme Poverty Affects Many College Students., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
One of the most painful realities of higher education in the 21st century – and one that gets very little attention – is the fact that some college students live in extreme poverty, oftentimes sleeping in libraries, cars, or temporarily with friends. Despite the extreme conditions under which they live, or in many cases because of them, these students still seek the education and training needed to be able to get a job and move out of poverty. Some colleges and universities are taking steps to help.

There is little doubt that an international experience
is one of the most life-changing events for a college student.
That is what one hears from students when they
return, particularly from those who have never even
been abroad in their lives. Cost is usually mentioned
as the major barrier for Americans to have such an
experience. And this barrier can be particularly high for
minority and first-generation college students.
Yet, there is a little known but very successful federal
program known as The Benjamin A. Gilman International
Scholarship Program that serves to help U.S. college students
interested in going abroad.

Scandals Are Threatening Higher Education., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Among the unfortunate curses affecting the
image of higher education are the scandals taking
place with unrelenting regularity. Whether
they have to do with athletics, sexual assaults,
murders, cheating, hazing, or corruption, the
media are echoing those scandals, sometimes
in excruciating detail. In some cases, like the
“Sandusky affair” that made headlines for
months and tarnished the reputation of Penn
State University and its renowned football coach
Joe Paterno, these scandals have a lasting effect
on public opinion.
We in academia have always been worried
about the effect of these scandals on an issue
very important to colleges and universities …
Characteristics Of Early Non-Persisting Developmental Education Students In The Community College: A Nested Analysis, Joseph George Grailer
Characteristics Of Early Non-Persisting Developmental Education Students In The Community College: A Nested Analysis, Joseph George Grailer
Dissertations
Many first-year, first-semester community college students take multiple developmental education courses, expending significant time, money and opportunity costs, but do not return for a second semester. Students who do not persist past their first semester are unlikely to ever return to post-secondary education, so it is critical to identify and assist these students as early in their postsecondary career as possible. To assist colleges with this effort, this study employed chi-square and logistic regression analyses on data collected during students' application and enrollment processes, as well as students’ first semester course performance, to create several nested models of characteristics correlated …
