Community College Students' Academic Success And Persistence In Math Courses After Developmental Math: A Case Study, Robin Bontrager
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative research study was a bounded case study exploring how and why community college students achieved academic success after completion of the developmental math sequence and a college level math course. The purpose of this research was to explore how and why community college students were academically successful in college algebra or elementary statistics after completion of the developmental math sequence. For the purpose of this study, the students' changes in behavior that influenced academic success and persistence in their math courses were generally defined as involvement in academic support programs, integration into social groups, and the perception of …

What Factors Of Motivation Predict Achievement Of College Readiness? A Study Of Self-Determination And College Readiness, Laura Meeks Hudson
What Factors Of Motivation Predict Achievement Of College Readiness? A Study Of Self-Determination And College Readiness, Laura Meeks Hudson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This predictive, correlational study examines the association between the fulfillment of the three basic psychological needs (relatedness, competence, and autonomy) described by self-determination theory and the academic achievement of college readiness as measured by ACT scores. Self-determination theory posits that fulfillment of the three basic psychological needs is associated with greater academic achievement. Juniors from a public high school complete the Basic Psychological Needs Scale questionnaire and the results will be analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression to determine whether or not relatedness, competence, and/or autonomy may be predictors of college readiness achievement.

Assessing A College Readiness Model For An Independent Residential School, Natalia Dorovskaya Collins
Assessing A College Readiness Model For An Independent Residential School, Natalia Dorovskaya Collins
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Interest in the topic of college readiness is growing as more and more high school graduates are not prepared for college-level work (Bok, 2006, 2013; González, 2012; Pascarella, Wolniak, Pierson, & Terenzini, 2003; Professor X, 2011). Most models offering assessment of the college readiness of students concentrate strictly upon the academic part of the issue – high school GPAs, high school course titles, standardized test scores – while disregarding non-academic elements, such as time management, the ability to demonstrate college-level academic behaviors and a general awareness of the environments present in different institutions of higher education. The purpose of this …

Developing Moocs To Narrow The College Readiness Gap: Challenges And Recommendations For A Writing Course, Shoba Bandi-Rao, Christopher Devers
Developing Moocs To Narrow The College Readiness Gap: Challenges And Recommendations For A Writing Course, Shoba Bandi-Rao, Christopher Devers
Publications and Research
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have demonstrated the potential to deliver quality and cost effective course materials to large numbers of students. Approximately 60% of first-year students at community colleges are underprepared for college-level coursework. One reason for low graduation rates is the lack of the overall college readiness. MOOCs offering "remedial" writing have the potential to better prepare high school graduates for college, thereby increasing their chances of completing a degree and reducing the cost of education for students, families, institutions, and taxpayers. However, MOOCs are typically more suitable for motivated and prepared students. Designing a MOOC on writing …

The Effects Of A K-12 Dual Language Instruction Program On Student College Readiness, Danielle Adair Cortes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diverse student populations are increasing in local, state, and national settings. There are achievement gaps in college readiness which must be closed between various student demographic groups. It is important for schools to know what methods work best for language acquisition to close the gaps and open postsecondary opportunities for all students. The purpose of this sequential, explanatory, mixed-method, formative program evaluation study was to examine the effects of a dual language (DL) program on improving the college readiness of students. Guided by the framework of learning and second language acquisition, college readiness levels between DL and non-DL students were …

Students with intellectual disabilities (ID) are increasingly seeking postsecondary education (PSE) opportunities. High school to college transition presents its challenges for all students, and school counselors are uniquely positioned to assist students with ID throughout the PSE process. This article provides a review of the literature on PSE and specifically explores the different types of PSE programming available and strategies high school counselors can employ to effectively assist students with ID in PSE planning.
