The Impact Of Design-Based Modeling Instruction On Seventh Graders' Spatial Abilities And Model-Based Argumentation, William J. Mcconnell Jul 2015

The Impact Of Design-Based Modeling Instruction On Seventh Graders' Spatial Abilities And Model-Based Argumentation, William J. Mcconnell

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

Due to the call of current science education reform for the integration of engineering practices within science classrooms, design-based instruction is receiving much attention in science education literature. Although some aspect of modeling is often included in well-known design-based instructional methods, it is not always a primary focus. The purpose of this study was to better understand how design-based instruction with an emphasis on scientific modeling might impact students' spatial abilities and their model-based argumentation abilities. In the following mixed-method multiple case study, seven seventh grade students attending a secular private school in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States …

"Zome": An Interactive Art Piece, Cassidy Moellers, Robert Spinosa, Dylan Chance May 2015

"Zome": An Interactive Art Piece, Cassidy Moellers, Robert Spinosa, Dylan Chance

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

As our communities expand rapidly, both physically and digitally, we can lose our sense of connection and togetherness. Interactive and participatory art interventions cultivate community by provoking engagement in unexpected areas. In this project, the prototype for an interactive zonohedral dome (or “zome”) was constructed as a proof of concept for an art intervention to engage students in collaborative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning, by creating feelings of connection with the technology and with each other. Consequently, it demonstrates the values of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) movement in education. Design elements (and an assessment …

Mixed Media Visualization Effect On Student Perceptions And Learning Outcomes, James Birt Apr 2015

Mixed Media Visualization Effect On Student Perceptions And Learning Outcomes, James Birt

James Birt

This paper presents a methodology and pilot study rationale to examine the effect of mixed media visualization on learning outcomes in three dimensional (3D) modeling. The context for this study is a university first year undergraduate interactive media and design course. Meta analytic studies in the use of visualizations show positive improvements in learning outcomes among low and high spatial learners. But often these studies are focused on single media and virtual representations. Many multimedia learning studies do not take into consideration important factors that could influence the appropriate selection of media. This exploratory study aims to address this through the …

Effect Of Mixed Media Visualization On Learner Perceptions And Outcomes, James Birt, Dirk Hovorka Apr 2015

Effect Of Mixed Media Visualization On Learner Perceptions And Outcomes, James Birt, Dirk Hovorka

James Birt

This pilot study examines the effect of mixed media visualization on learner perceptions and outcomes in 3D spatial modeling. The context for this study is a university first year undergraduate interactive media and design course. Meta analytic studies in the use of visualizations show positive improvements in learning outcomes among low and high spatial learners. But often these studies are focused on single media and virtual representations. Many multimedia learning studies do not take into consideration important factors that could influence the appropriateselection of media. This exploratory study aims to address this from a learner’s perspective through the evaluation of …
