This article discusses the development of critical consciousness by examining
the biographical-narratives in relationship to the experiential accounts on
travel. Biographical narratives are important cultural texts filled with history
and cultural nuances. The biography of Ernesto Che Guevara has resonated
with readers and viewers from around the world. By dreaming seemingly
impossible dreams and garnering triumph in the face of mounting obstacles,
Che has inspired the generations that have followed him. The life of Che,
which is a myth of idealism, has captivated the hearts of many around the

How Students From Non-Dominant Cultures Perceive Their Social And Cultural Experiences In Relation To School Success, Margaret Cooley

This study explores the shared narratives of males who are African American, come from low-income families, struggled with school success, and may have been identified as needing specialized instructional services or having learning disabilities. This study includes three participants' narratives on the obstacles and supports they faced during their high school years and when transitioning beyond. It identifies shared themes of sports, reputation, and instruction, transitioning, and mentoring -- including the relationship between each and how it impacted their school success.

This four-month case study explored the connections among language, literacy, and identity development of five African American women as they shared narratives within a beauty salon context. The questions that guided the study were: (a) What language and literacy practices are enacted in the beauty salon? (b) In what way do African American women narrate their experiences? (c) What stories are shared by African American women in the salon? (d) What are the effects on the listeners of the narratives shared in the salon? and (e) How are social and cultural identities (co)constructed and performed in the narratives?
