This interdisciplinary project explores the potential for handheld/wireless (H/W) technology in the context of language education within and beyond the classroom. Specifically, we have designed and implemented a suite of multi-platform (desktop/laptop, handheld, and browser) applications to enhance the teaching of South Asian languages such as Hindi-Urdu. Such languages are very difficult to learn, let alone write, and H/W devices (with their handwriting/drawing capabilities) can play a significant role in overcoming the learning curve. The role of speech-language therapists (SLTs) has been redefined by White Paper 6, which emphasizes the role of support to both teachers and learners. SLTs have expert knowledge and skills pertaining to communication and language, and therefore have much to contribute to the process of learning in teaching. This article builds on a previous article published in the 2010 edition of the journal, which reported on the process of supporting teachers to facilitate listening, language and numeracy skills in semi-rural and urban (township) contexts. In this follow-up article the focus is on the qualitative findings obtained from a specific section …

Caló is the language used in Chicano neighborhoods; a source of identity and intimacy among English Language Learners with Spanish roots. Caló shapes character and lives of many who cross-communicate within the US and abroad. This is a story of my life with Caló - as a global consultant and academic with experiences in several different communities and countries, from the 1960s to 2012.
