Engaging College Communities: The Impact Of Residential Colleges In Australian Higher Education, Hamish Coates, Daniel Edwards
Engaging College Communities: The Impact Of Residential Colleges In Australian Higher Education, Hamish Coates, Daniel Edwards
Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE)
Residential colleges play a vital role in many of the best universities in the world. Intuitively, it seems clear that living in a university-affiliated residence would enhance students’ educational involvement and outcomes. Reports from those closely involved in residential colleges provide a considerable amount of support for this proposition. Anecdotal reports help build a rich picture of residential life in Australian higher education, but overly relying on such data limits the extent to which colleges can be situated, compared and understood within broader contexts. Hence it is helpful to complement perceptual reports with data that offer more objective insights into …
Toward The Equitable Distribution Of Enriching Educational Experiences: Faculty Engagement With Racial Minority Students, Shaun R. Harper
Toward The Equitable Distribution Of Enriching Educational Experiences: Faculty Engagement With Racial Minority Students, Shaun R. Harper
Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise
Peña, Bensimon, and Colyar (2006) noted: “Not only do African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans have lower graduation rates than [do] Whites and Asian Americans, they also experience inequalities in just about every indicator of academic success – from earned grade point average to placement on the dean’s list to graduation rates in competitive majors” (p. 48). While these and other racialized outcomes disparities cannot be attributed to a narrow set of explanatory factors, one thing is known for sure: College students who are actively engaged inside and outside the classroom are considerably more likely than are their disengaged peers …
Middle Years Students' Use Of Self-Regulating Strategies In An Online Journaling Environment, Chris Campbell
Middle Years Students' Use Of Self-Regulating Strategies In An Online Journaling Environment, Chris Campbell
Education Papers and Journal Articles
This study investigated boys’ capacity for self regulation in a Year 8 classroom at a regional secondary college in the state of Victoria, Australia. This was an exploratory descriptive study that sought to examine how the use of an online journal influenced students’ capacity to adaptively react (Zimmerman, 2002) to self-determined knowledge about the effectiveness of their method of learning and set learning goals (Ames & Ames, 1989; Midgley, Kaplan, & Middleton, 2001). An online recording and online journaling space were developed by the researcher. The journal has been designed to be engaging for young adolescent male students as well …
A Case Study Of Student Engagement In Collaborative Group Learning In A Blended Community Based (Service) Learning Module, John G. Mcgarrigle
A Case Study Of Student Engagement In Collaborative Group Learning In A Blended Community Based (Service) Learning Module, John G. Mcgarrigle
Research Theses
Abstract: A participatory action research case study employed mixed methods to examine student collaboration and engagement in a Community Based (Service) learning module. A quasi experimental testing of Coates (2007) typology of student engagement found low agreement between students and lecturers in assigning the terms, passive, intense, independent or collaborative to student postings to discussion fora. Evidence from this case study found greater student collaboration in discussion fora when linked to practical course activity. Qualitative analysis of discussion threads using conversation analysis provided evidence for collaboration in deeper knowledge construction when supported by lecturers’ contributions. Discourse analysis examined interviews with …

How Libraries And Librarians Can Support Student Engagement, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE)
This AUSSE Enhancement Guide makes suggestions about the role libraries and librarians have in enhancing student engagement. It considers the importance of increasing student access to library resources, the physical library space, relationships between library and academic staff; and improving students’ engagement with the library.
Adding Value To First Year Student Learning With Embedded Library Pod/Vodcasts, Julia Gross, Eva Dobozy
Adding Value To First Year Student Learning With Embedded Library Pod/Vodcasts, Julia Gross, Eva Dobozy
Research outputs pre 2011
We begin with the premise that pod/vodcasts add an engaging and innovative mix to the university learning environment; they put the control of when and where to access information in the hands of the student and can be delivered through the university’s learning management system (LMS). In this paper, we describe a semester-long trial in which library pod/vodcasts were provided to first-year teacher education students in the belief that basic library skills development is vital for academic success and an essential component of good information literacy practice. The pod/vodcasts were offered to support students at point of need in their …
