The Impacts Of School-Business Partnerships On The Early Labor-Market Success Of Students, John H. Bishop, Ferran Mane
The Impacts Of School-Business Partnerships On The Early Labor-Market Success Of Students, John H. Bishop, Ferran Mane
John H Bishop
[Excerpt] This chapter examines the effects of improved signaling of student achievement in high school on the labor market success of recent high-school graduates. The chapter is organized into three sections. In the first section, we reproduce the argument that Bishop put forth in 1985 that better signaling of student achievement to employers would improve the quality of the jobs that recent high-school graduates could obtain and strengthen incentives to learn. In the second section, we analyze longitudinal data on eight graders in 1988 and attempt to measure the effect of school-employer partnerships on their subsequent success in the labor …

The Role Of End-Of-Course Exams And Minimum Competency Exams In Standards-Based Reforms, John H. Bishop, Ferran Mane, Michael Bishop, Joan Moriarty
John H Bishop
[Excerpt] Educational reformers and most of the American public believe that most teachers ask too little of their pupils. These low expectations, they believe, result in watered down curricula and a tolerance of mediocre teaching and inappropriate student behavior. The result is that the prophecy of low achievement becomes self-fulfilling. Although research has shown that learning gains are substantially larger when students take more demanding courses2, only a minority of students enroll in these courses. There are several reasons for this. Guidance counselors in many schools allow only a select few into the most challenging courses. While most schools give …
What Is Rigor?: A Qualitative Analysis Of One School’S Definition, Heather Bower, Joelle Powers
What Is Rigor?: A Qualitative Analysis Of One School’S Definition, Heather Bower, Joelle Powers
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
In an era of increasing accountability, school administrators and faculties often find themselves amid a plethora of best practices and strategies aimed at improving students’ academic achievement. In the midst of these discussions, school culture is often hailed as the key to creating effective schools because it defines how people within a particular school are to behave and what they are to value (Stolp & Smith, 1995). Furthermore, it allows administrators to draw attention to some of the culture’s most important aspects: its values, beliefs, and assumptions that create the school’s vision for excellence (Stolp & Smith, 1995). Malloy (2005) …
Potential Extensions To Transformational Leadership Models, C.R.A. Jackson
Potential Extensions To Transformational Leadership Models, C.R.A. Jackson
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
The view adopted in this research was that transformational leadership (Bass 1985; Burns 1978) could be characterised by an ability to bring about significant change in an organization, and that transactional leadership above was inadequate for this task. Since the 1980s, research (Avolio & Bass 2002; Bass 1990; Parry 1996) supported the idea that transformational leadership was more effective than transactional leadership in generating the extra effort, commitment and satisfaction of those being led (Bass 1990). Transformational leadership was a process where leaders and followers raised one another to higher moral and motivational levels (Yukl 1971). As Bass (1990) asserted, …

Educational Restructuring And The Policy Process: The Toronto District School Board 1997-2003, Duncan Maclellan
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
This paper will examine the seminal events leading up to passage of the Fewer School Boards Act (Bill 104), and its impact on the newly created Toronto District School Board (TDSB). While the focus of this paper will be on Bill 104, it is important to note that significant structural changes needed to occur in Toronto and its neighbouring municipalities before Bill 104 could take effect. To facilitate these changes, the Ontario government introduced and passed Bill 148 An Act to Establish a New City of Toronto. Bill 148 amalgamated the City of Toronto with the surrounding cities of East …
Validation Of An Emotional Intelligence Scale: A Case Of An African Sample, Ibraheem Dooba
Validation Of An Emotional Intelligence Scale: A Case Of An African Sample, Ibraheem Dooba
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
There has been serious effort to develop scales to measure emotional intelligence since the first measure of an aspect of emotional intelligence – the perception of affective content in ambiguous visual stimuli (Mayer, DiPaolo, & Salovey, 1990) – was reported in a scientific journal (Mayer, Caruso, & Salovey, 2000). The studies were done in relation with a number of variables such as academic achievement (Newsome, Day, and Catano, 2000); leadership (Humphrey, 2002); personality (Lopes, Salovey, and Straus, 2003; Newsome et al. 2000); sex (Charbonneau and Nicol, 2002; Saklofske, Austin, and Minski, 2003), and IQ (Saklofske et al., 2003).

Science Homework And Parental Involvement: Factors Influencing Behaviors And Attitudes, Dana Harwell, Kate Brown
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
The purpose of this study is to understand confounding information regarding homework and school achievement. Recent research has sought to identify specific factors impacting student success as it relates to homework including parental involvement, parental education, gender, socio-economic status, computer and internet use, extra-curricular activities, and other factors. Unfortunately, the results of these studies have lacked consensus. The review of the literature shows attempts have been made to isolate co-variates along with important factors such as gender, parental involvement, and student characteristics, but the results have been unclear. This study utilized a qualitative design with interviews, observations, and collection of …

Democratic Engagement White Paper, John Saltmarsh, Matthew Hartley, Patti Clayton
Democratic Engagement White Paper, John Saltmarsh, Matthew Hartley, Patti Clayton
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
Participants at a recent Wingspread conference on civic engagement in higher education concluded that while the movement has created some change, it has also plateaued and requires a more comprehensive effort to ensure lasting commitment and institutional capacity. For the participants at Wingspread, and for others involved in civic engagement in higher education, the time has come for “calling the question” of whether engagement will be viewed as a core value of the university of the 21st century – as centrally important to the civic mission of higher education and to generating and transmitting new knowledge. The concern is that …

This paper is a proposal to carry out a systematic program evaluation of the Sigma Phi Epsilon EDGE New Member Program, and was submitted to the Department of Education for funding in February 2009. The letter I received from the DOE indicated that my proposal did not fully meet the criteria for the grant competition since the study included students from many campuses rather than being focused on prevention programming for just one campus. The proposal does, however, provide evidence that new member education on prevention among fraternity men within six weeks of their joining an organization is promising. Compare …

The Technological University Dublin is one of the largest multi-level higher education providers in Ireland, catering for over 22,000 students annually. Under the 1999 Qualifications (Education and Training) Act, DIT became an awarding body in its own right. Programme provision covers apprenticeships, short continuous professional development courses, taught undergraduate and postgraduate, research MPhil and PhDs. While the Institute’s traditional mission1 was focused on teaching and learning in the field of advanced technical vocational education and training (TVET), over the last decade the importance of developing a research informed culture has become prominent in the strategic policy development of the Institute. …

Igniting And Nurturing The Next Generation Of Stem Talent, Innovation And Leadership, By Design, Stephanie Pace Marshall
Igniting And Nurturing The Next Generation Of Stem Talent, Innovation And Leadership, By Design, Stephanie Pace Marshall
Publications & Research
Regrettably, most American students experience STEM learning as an exclusive, individual, theoretical and “formulaic” enterprise. By decoupling STEM education from the human experience, we have distorted the essential nature of the scientific enterprise and advanced instrumentalist and utilitarian rationales for pursuing STEM careers—global economic superiority and technological competition.

This paper discusses how Design-Based Research was utilised to inform the methodological design of a completed project conducted at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia. The project focused on the systematic development of an Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS) to assist K-12 teachers as they incorporated learning objects into a pedagogically effective learning design – a WebQuest. The paper specifically details the background of the project, the history of Design-Based research, why a Design-Based Research approach was adopted and how the approach was implemented. The paper also includes a discussion about the practical problems, issues and advantages …

Doing Good Qualitative Research In Public Health: Not As Easy As It Looks, Stacy M. Carter, Jan E. Ritchie, Peter Sainsbury
Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
In this paper, we discuss qualitative research for public health professionals. Quality matters in qualitative research, but the principles by which it is judged are critically different from those used to judge epidemiology. Compared to quantitative research, good quality qualitative studies serve different aims, answer distinct research questions and have their own logic for sampling, data collection and analysis. There is, however, no need for antagonism between qualitative research and epidemiology; the two are complementary. With theoretical and methodological guidance from experienced qualitative researchers, public health professionals can learn how to make the most of qualitative research for themselves.
